Bupleurum root is also known as di-xun, shan-cai, gu-cao, and chai-cao. It is the dried root of Bupleurum chinense or Bupleurum scorzonerifolium, a plant in the Apiaceae family,and is an herb that releases exterior wind-heat. It is bitter and slightly cold in nature and enters the liver, gallbladder, and lung channels.
It both disperses pathogenic qi from the gallbladder channel to harmonize and reduce fever, and disperses stagnant qi from the liver and gallbladder channels to soothe the liver and relieve depression. It also raises clear yang qi from the liver and gallbladder to lift prolapse, making it an important herb for the liver, gallbladder, and lung channels. The Divine Farmer's Classic of Materia Medica further lists it among the highest-grade Chinese medicines.
It has effects including dispersing pathogens and reducing fever, soothing the liver and relieving depression, raising yang qi, protecting the liver and promoting bile flow,inhibiting gastric acid,improving vision, benefiting essence, and clearing deficient heat. Modern medical research has also found lipid-lowering, anti-inflammatory, anticonvulsant, anti-ulcer, antitumor, and other effects. It can be used for colds with fever, alternating chills and fever, malaria, liver qi stagnation, palpitations and insomnia, distension and pain in the chest and ribs, stagnant qi in the heart, abdomen, intestines, and stomach, excessive gastric acid, food accumulation, hand-foot yin and Shaoyang disorders, rectal prolapse, uterine prolapse, irregular menstruation, and more.

Zhang Zhongjing's On Cold Damage record of Minor Bupleurum Decoction:
Bupleurum root 24 g; Scutellaria root, ginseng, pinellia tuber, and fresh ginger 9 g each; honey-fried licorice root 6 g; 4 jujubes. Add 2,200 mL of water and decoct until half remains. Strain out the dregs, then decoct again until half remains (550 mL). Take warm in 3 divided doses daily.
This formula primarily treats the Shaoyang pattern of cold damage, characterized by alternating chills and fever, fullness and discomfort in the chest and hypochondria, taciturnity and lack of appetite, irritability with frequent vomiting, bitter taste in the mouth, dry throat, dizziness, a thin white tongue coating, and a wiry pulse; the blood-chamber heat pattern, characterized by a woman with cold damage whose menstruation has just stopped and who experiences periodic bouts of chills and fever; as well as jaundice, malaria, and internal injury disorders presenting with a Shaoyang pattern.
In clinical traditional Chinese medicine, it is commonly used to treat influenza, malaria, chronic hepatitis, acute and chronic cholecystitis, gallstones, pleurisy, otitis media, puerperal fever, acute mastitis, orchitis, gastric ulcers, and other conditions characterized by pathogenic factors lodged in the Shaoyang and disharmony between the gallbladder and stomach.
