Benefits and Uses
Also known as Xue Zhi and Fang Xiang, Dahurian angelica root is the dried root of the Apiaceae plants Angelica dahurica or Angelica dahurica var. formosana. It is a traditional herb used to relieve wind-cold exterior conditions and promote blood circulation, and is also a commonly used aromatic spice.
It has a pungent flavor and warming nature, and is associated with the Stomach, Large Intestine, and Lung meridians.
It is believed to release the exterior and dispel cold, promote blood circulation and relieve pain, open the nasal passages, dry dampness and stop abnormal vaginal discharge, reduce swelling and expel pus, dispel wind and relieve itching, and help brighten the skin and reduce dark spots. It may be used for wind-cold and wind-heat colds, headaches and toothaches, rheumatic pain, nasal congestion, abnormal vaginal discharge, and sores, abscesses, and swelling caused by toxins. It is also used for gynecological conditions and is traditionally valued for its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and blood-pressure-lowering properties.
The Compendium of Materia Medica records: “Dahurian angelica root is white in color and pungent in flavor, traveling through the Hand Yangming meridian; its nature is warm and its qi is rich, traveling through the Foot Yangming meridian; its fragrance rises upward and enters the Hand Taiyin Lung meridian. Conditions of the head, eyes, eyebrows, and teeth involve wind-heat in these three meridians; conditions such as vaginal discharge, abscesses, and carbuncles involve damp-heat in these three meridians. For wind-heat, pungency disperses it; for damp-heat, warmth removes it. As a principal herb of the Yangming meridian, it can also treat blood and pregnancy-related disorders, expel pus, promote tissue regeneration, and relieve pain. It treats nasal congestion, toothache, bleeding during urination, pain in the brow ridge, constipation caused by Large Intestine wind, dizziness due to blood deficiency in women, vomiting and food regurgitation; it counteracts arsenic poisoning, treats snakebites, nosebleeds, and wounds caused by knives, arrows, or metal.”
Tips
Crucian carp or other soup (for relieving head-wind)
Chuanxiong slices 15g, Dahurian angelica root slices 15g, Gastrodia slices 10, 1 white crucian carp (approximately 250g), sliced ginger, scallion sections, cooking wine, pepper, and other ingredients as needed.
Clean and prepare all the ingredients. Heat oil in a pan and fry the crucian carp until golden brown on both sides. Wash the pot again, then add all the ingredients and approximately 1000ml of water. Bring to a boil over high heat, reduce the heat, simmer for about 30 minutes, and season.
Jiuwei Qianghuo Decoction: “Induces sweating, releases the exterior, dispels dampness, and clears internal heat.” It is mainly used for exterior wind-cold-dampness with underlying accumulated heat. Symptoms include aversion to cold, fever, absence of sweating, headache, stiff neck, aching and painful limbs, a bitter taste with slight thirst, a white or slightly yellow tongue coating, and a floating pulse.
Notopterygium root, saposhnikovia root, and atractylodes rhizome, 9 grams each; asarum, 3 grams; Chuanxiong, Dahurian angelica root, rehmannia root, scutellaria root, and licorice root, 6 grams each;decoct in water and drink.

Shipping Issues
