Moutan bark is also known as powdered moutan bark and peony bark.It is the dried root bark of the peony, a plant in the buttercup family, and is used in traditional Chinese medicine to clear heat and regulate the blood. It is commonly used to make infused water, soups, and decoctions.
It has a bitter and pungent taste and is slightly cold in nature. It is associated with the heart, liver, and kidney meridians.
It is traditionally used to clear heat and cool the blood, promote blood circulation and remove blood stasis, fight bacteria and inflammation, provide antioxidant effects, and promote wound healing. Moutan bark enters the kidney meridian and can reduce deficiency heat. It combines the functions of clearing blood heat, reducing deficiency heat, and dispersing blood stasis. It may be used as appropriate for blood heat, blood stasis, or deficiency heat, whether occurring alone or together, especially when blood heat is accompanied by blood stasis, blood stasis is accompanied by heat, deficiency heat is accompanied by blood stasis, or there is steaming bone fever without sweating. It is commonly used for heat entering the nutritive and blood levels, warm-toxin rashes, vomiting blood and nosebleeds, nighttime fever with morning chills, steaming bone fever without sweating, amenorrhea and painful menstruation, pain from falls and injuries, and sores, abscesses, and swelling caused by toxic heat.
For warm febrile diseases with heat entering the blood level, dark-purple rashes, fever, and a crimson tongue: commonly used with water buffalo horn, rehmannia root, red peony root, and other herbs.

Ginger root, ophiopogon root, angelica root, white peony root, Sichuan lovage root, ginseng, cinnamon twig, donkey-hide gelatin, moutan bark, and licorice10 grams each. Add 800 ml of water (about 3 bowls), bring to a boil over high heat, then simmer over low heat for about 45 minutes. Strain 300 ml of liquid, add the donkey-hide gelatin and stir until dissolved, then drink warm in 2 servings.
