Corydalis Rhizome, also known as Yan Hu Suo or Xuan Hu Suo, is the spherical tuber of a perennial herb in the Corydalis genus of the poppy family. The best quality has yellow skin and yellow flesh, with small, firm tubers. It is an important medicinal herb for invigorating the blood, resolving blood stasis, promoting qi circulation, and relieving pain.
Traditional Chinese medicine holds that vinegar processing enhances the ability of Corydalis Rhizome to invigorate the blood, resolve blood stasis, promote qi circulation, and relieve pain. Modern medical research also indicates that it produces stronger effects in an acidic environment.

It is believed to invigorate the blood and dispel blood stasis, promote qi circulation and relieve pain, promote urination and reduce swelling, and calm the mind and soothe the spirit. It is commonly used for stomach pain, chest pain, hypochondriac pain, angina, headaches, menstrual pain, amenorrhea, postpartum abdominal pain or blood-stasis obstruction, joint pain, swelling and pain from sprains and other injuries, anxiety, insomnia, and more.
In the Compendium of Materia Medica, Li Shizhen summarized the four main effects of Corydalis Rhizome as “invigorating the blood, promoting qi, relieving pain, and facilitating urination.” It is suitable for symptoms such as wind-cold colds, Spleen and Stomach deficiency-cold, and qi stagnation with blood stasis. In particular, vinegar-processed Corydalis Rhizome is more effective at invigorating the blood, resolving blood stasis, promoting qi circulation, and relieving pain, especially for chest and hypochondriac distension and pain, menstrual pain, retained postpartum lochia, upper gastrointestinal ulcers, and other conditions.

① Corydalis Rhizome,Chinese angelica root, and mugwort leaves, 10g each; lean meat, 100g; and approximately 3 bowls of water. Simmer over low heat until reduced to about 1 bowl. Take once daily for 3-5 days before menstruation.
② Add Corydalis Rhizome to the Goddess Four Substances Soup (see the Salvia Root or Ligusticum Rhizome page for details).
③ Steep 10g each of Corydalis Rhizome and dahurian angelica root in water, or boil them in water.
For swelling and pain from sprains and other injuries: commonly combined with frankincense and myrrh.
For invigorating the blood and promoting qi circulation: commonly combined with Salvia Root and Ligusticum Rhizome.
For stomach pain, hypochondriac pain, headaches, and menstrual pain: commonly combined with dahurian angelica root.
For regulating menstruation: commonly combined with Chinese angelica root and motherwort.
