Huazhou orange, commonly known as “Huajuhong,” is a specialty originating in Huazhou, Maoming, Guangdong Province. It is a product with a national geographical indication and ranks first among the “Eight Authentic Lingnan Medicinal Herbs.” In ancient times, it was even presented as a tribute to the imperial palace. It is made by processing the dried outer peel or young fruit of the Huazhou pomelo (Citrus maxima Tomentosa), a plant in the citrus genus of the rue family, while the fruit is unripe or nearly ripe. It is an herb used to regulate qi.

Warm in nature and bitter and pungent in taste, it is associated with the Lung and Spleen meridians. It is popularly praised as being “remarkably effective for resolving phlegm.” Its key benefits include:
  • Dries dampness and resolves phlegm: Specifically helps address wind-cold coughs, itchy throats, and copious, sticky phlegm, especially white or cold phlegm.
  • Regulates qi and relieves chest fullness: Helps ease chest and epigastric fullness and improve chest tightness and shortness of breath.
  • Aids digestion and sobers up: Helps relieve food stagnation, nausea, vomiting, chest and epigastric fullness, and stomach discomfort caused by excessive alcohol consumption. 

Tips

【Er Chen Tang】first appeared in Formulary of the Imperial Grace Pharmacy and has the effects of “drying dampness, resolving phlegm, regulating qi, and harmonizing the middle.” Mr. Ni, a renowned Taiwanese Chinese medicine practitioner, also praised this formula as a classic.

Indications: Damp-phlegm syndrome, including cough with copious phlegm that is white and easy to expectorate, nausea and vomiting, chest and epigastric fullness, heavy limbs, or dizziness and palpitations, with a white, slippery, or greasy tongue coating and a slippery pulse.

Formula: “15 g pinellia, 15 g orange peel (modern versions use aged tangerine peel), 9 g poria, and 5 g honey-fried licorice root. Rinse, then add approximately 4 bowls of water, 7 slices of ginger, and 1 smoked plum.” Soak for approximately 30 minutes, bring to a boil over high heat, then simmer over low heat until the liquid is reduced by half. Strain out the solids. Take one dose daily in 2 portions, warm, 30 minutes after meals.
Warnings: Not suitable when there are no signs of phlegm or fluid retention; not suitable for phlegm-heat obstructing the Lungs or for blood-streaked phlegm due to yin deficiency and heat.


Cough with copious phlegm: Steep 5 g of Huajuhong alone or with 3 g of green tea. Add 200 mL of boiling water and drink; continue re-steeping until the flavor becomes weak.

Chronic cough with copious phlegm and chest tightness: Huajuhong12 g, apricot kernels 6 g. Decoction in water, then strain out the solids. Take in 2 portions daily, warm, 30 minutes after meals.
Note: You may also add 50 g of japonica rice and an appropriate amount of water to make porridge. Take in 2 portions daily, warm, 30 minutes after meals.
