Note: Authentic spring sand ginger is loose, oval, or egg-shaped, with a reddish-brown ordark brown surface and thorn-like protrusions. It has three indistinct ridges. The fruit skin is relatively thin and easily splits longitudinally. The inner surface is brown, and the seeds are clustered together. It has a fragrant and strong aroma.
Sand ginger is also known as shrink-sand ginger, Yangchun sand ginger, and spring sand ginger. It is not only a fragrant spice but also a Chinese medicinal herb traditionally used to warm the middle, regulate qi, dispel dampness, and prevent miscarriage. Sand ginger is mainly divided into three types: Yangchun sand, Hainan sand, and fragrant sand. Genuine sand ginger consists of the dried, mature fruits of the ginger-family plants Yangchun sand ginger, green-shell sand ginger, or Hainan sand ginger.
Native to Yangchun, Guangdong, genuine sand ginger has high medicinal value but limited production, making it expensive.It is also cultivated in Fujian, Guangxi, Yunnan, Laos, and Vietnam, but these varieties have lower medicinal value and are often used as spices. In traditional Chinese medicine, they are also called counterfeit sand ginger.
Yangchun sand ginger has a pungent taste and warm properties. It is associated with the spleen, stomach, and kidney meridians.
It is traditionally used to dispel dampness and stimulate the appetite, warm the spleen and relieve diarrhea, regulate qi and prevent miscarriage, relieve bloating, strengthen the stomach, relieve nausea and vomiting, and improve appetite.

Sand Ginger, Astragalus, and Pork Stomach Soup: 10g each of sand ginger and astragalus, 5 slices ginger, 1 pork stomach, 250g lean meat, and an appropriate amount of water. Simmer or make into soup.
Sand Ginger, Atractylodes, and Crucian Carp Soup: 10g each of sand ginger and atractylodes, 5 slices ginger, an appropriate amount of scallion segments, and 1 crucian carp (pre-fry until golden brown on both sides). Add water to all ingredients and bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 40 minutes. Season to taste.
