Evodia fruit is also known as tea pepper and qi pepper. Small flowers are considered the best; those with a strong aroma, dark green color, full grains, and high medicinal value are preferred. It is a warming exterior-releasing and cold-dispelling herb that can be infused in water or liquor, cooked in soups or porridge, or decocted.
Evodia fruit is used medicinally; it is hot in nature, pungent in flavor, and enters the liver, spleen, stomach, and kidney meridians.
It dispels wind and cold, removes dampness, relieves pain, directs rebellious qi downward and stops vomiting, supports yang and stops diarrhea, and kills bacteria and relieves itching. It is oftenUsed for lesser-yin headache and cold-type hernia with abdominal pain,Joint pain, numbness in the limbs, cold-dampness beriberi, menstrual abdominal pain, epigastric and abdominal distension and pain, vomiting and acid regurgitation, diarrhea at dawn, and similar conditions. Externally, it is used to kill bacteria and relieve itching, such as for itchy skin, eczema, and beriberi.

【Warming Menses Decoction】The formula first appeared in the Eastern Han dynasty in Essentials from the Golden Cabinet, written by Zhang Zhongjing, and has been one of the most commonly used traditional Chinese medicine formulas for regulating blood and menstruation since ancient times.
Warms the channels, dispels cold, nourishes the blood, and removes blood stasis. It is mainly used for cold deficiency in the thoroughfare and conception vessels with blood stasis obstruction. Indications include persistent uterine bleeding, dark blood with clots, scanty or prolonged spotting, menstruation occurring early or late, bleeding that does not stop after the expected period, menstruation occurring twice in one month, or absent menstruation, accompanied by lower abdominal cramping, abdominal fullness, fever in the evening, feverish palms, dry lips and mouth, a dark-red tongue, and a fine, choppy pulse. It also treats uterine cold and long-term infertility. In modern clinical practice, it is commonly used for functional uterine bleeding, chronic pelvic inflammatory disease, dysmenorrhea, infertility, and other conditions involving cold deficiency in the thoroughfare and conception vessels with blood stasis obstruction.
Original formula (dosage used during the Eastern Han dynasty): evodia fruit three liang; angelica root, Sichuan lovage root, peony root, ginseng, cinnamon twig, donkey-hide gelatin, tree peony bark (core removed), fresh ginger, and licorice, two liang each; pinellia tuber, half a sheng; ophiopogon root (core removed), one sheng. Combine the 12 ingredients, add one dou of water, boil until 3 sheng remain, and take warm in 3 divided doses.
Modern reference dosage and preparation method:
①Evodia fruit 5 g, ophiopogon root 20 g, ginseng,Processed pinellia tuber, honey-fried licorice, cinnamon twig, white peony root, angelica root, Sichuan lovage root, tree peony bark, and donkey-hide gelatin, 10 g each; dried ginger 5 g. Red dates 30 g may be added. Add 1000 mL of water and boil until the liquid300 mL, dissolve the donkey-hide gelatin into it, and take warm in 2–3 divided doses.
②Evodia fruit and ophiopogon root, 9 g each; angelica root, peony root, Sichuan lovage root, ginseng, cinnamon twig, donkey-hide gelatin, tree peony bark, dried ginger, licorice, and processed pinellia tuber, 6 g each.Add 1200 mL of water and boil until 600mL, dissolve the donkey-hide gelatin into it, and take warm in 3 divided doses.
③Evodia fruit, ophiopogon root, angelica root, white peony root, Sichuan lovage root, ginseng, cinnamon twig, donkey-hide gelatin, tree peony bark, and licorice, 10 g each. Add 800 mL of water (about 3 bowls), bring to a boil over high heat, then simmer for about 45 minutes. Take 300 mL of the liquid, add the donkey-hide gelatin and stir until dissolved, then take warm in 2 doses.
Warm the middle and tonify deficiency; direct rebellious qi downward and stop vomiting:

Evodia fruit 9 g, codonopsis root 5 g, ginger 20 g, 6 jujubes, clove 3 g. Add an appropriate amount of water and simmer; take 1 dose daily, warm, in the morning and evening.

Evodia fruit 9 g, ginger 18 g, ginseng 9 g, 12 jujubes. Boil in 1 liter of water until 300 mL remains; take in three divided doses.
