Wang Bu Liu Xing is also known as Vaccaria, cowherb, and other names.It is the dried, mature seed of Vaccaria segetalis, a plant in the Caryophyllaceae family. Its texture is hard, so its active compounds are not easily released during decoction. It therefore needs to be processed by stir-frying until the seeds burst open, similar to popcorn. Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners generally use the processed product, which is more convenient for brewing in water or decocting, and it is used to promote blood circulation and resolve blood stasis.
Bitter and neutral. Enters the Liver and Stomach meridians.
Wang Bu Liu Xing promotes blood circulation, regulates menstruation, resolves blood stasis, promotes lactation, reduces swelling, promotes urination, relieves strangury, and has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. It is commonly used to treat amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, difficult labor, insufficient lactation, wind-toxin, urticaria, boils, painful breast abscesses, painful or difficult urination, and strangury with burning pain, including heat strangury, blood strangury, and stone strangury.
The Compendium of Materia Medica states: Wang Bu Liu Xing can move through the blood aspect, and is a medicinal used for the Yangming and Chong and Ren channels. There is a popular saying: “Leopard’s claw and Wang Bu Liu Xing—after a woman takes them, her milk flows continuously,” which clearly shows that its nature is to move and not remain stagnant.
Tips
According to ancient Chinese medicine, insufficient lactation after childbirth is mainly caused by deficient qi and blood or liver qi stagnation.
Main purposes: nourish the blood, replenish qi, and promote lactation
①1 pig’s trotter,12g prepared Rehmannia root, 9g Chinese angelica root, 3g Sichuan lovage root, 3g akebia stem, 3g Wang Bu Liu Xing, 6g cyperus rhizome, g dried tangerine peel, and an appropriate amount of water.
②Wang Bu Liu Xing and astragalus root, 10g each; 4oz lean pork; and an appropriate amount of water. Simmer for 60 minutes and season to taste.
③1 pig’s trotter, 10g Chinese angelica root, 12g astragalus root, 20g Wang Bu Liu Xing, 12g Liquidambar fruit, 4g rice-paper plant pith, 50g peanuts, 50g soybeans, 5 slices of ginger, and an appropriate amount of water.
④1 large crucian carp, pan-fried until golden brown on both sides, or 16oz sliced lean pork; 16oz papaya; 16oz tofu; 20g stir-fried Wang Bu Liu Xing; ginger; scallion segments; and an appropriate amount of water.Simmer for 60 minutes and season to taste.
⑤30g each of ginseng, astragalus root, and Chinese angelica root; 10g Wang Bu Liu Xing; 15g Ophiopogon root; 3g akebia stem; 1 to 2 pig’s trotters; and an appropriate amount of water.
Note: For the combinations above, it is best to stew or simmer the pig’s trotters until tender, divide into 2 servings per day, and continue for 3 to 5 days. (Papaya may be added.)
Irregular menstruation:20g Wang Bu Liu Xing, 15g Chinese madder root, 15g achyranthes root, and an appropriate amount of water. Alternatively, add 8oz pig’s trotter and stew or simmer as a soup for approximately 3–5 hours. Divide into 2 servings per day for a 5-day course, beginning one week before menstruation.
Painful breast abscesses: Brew 10g each of stir-fried Wang Bu Liu Xing and dandelion tea in water.
Urination problems: Commonly used with talc
Dysmenorrhea and amenorrhea: Commonly used with Chinese angelica root, safflower, Sichuan lovage root, and others.
