Dittany Root Bark is also known as Northern Dittany Root Bark, Mountain Peony, and Goat-Scented Herb. It is the dried root bark of Dictamnus dasycarpus and narrow-leaved dittany, perennial herbaceous plants in the rue family. It is a traditional herb that clears heat and dries dampness.
It has a bitter taste and a cold nature. It is associated with the Spleen, Stomach, and Bladder meridians. Modern research indicates that Dittany Root Bark has various pharmacological effects, including antimicrobial, anti-endotoxin, anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressive, and antitumor effects, as well as liver-protective effects.
It is especially effective at clearing heat and toxins, drying dampness, promoting urination, dispelling wind, reducing jaundice, relieving itching, and alleviating painful obstruction. The Compendium of Materia Medica records it as “an essential herb for various types of jaundice, wind disorders, and painful obstruction. It may be used as appropriate for conditions caused by heat, dampness, and wind, and is commonly used for damp-heat sores and rashes, scabies and ringworm, damp-heat jaundice, and wind-damp-heat painful obstruction.” For example, it may be used for damp-heat sores and ulcers, oozing yellow fluid, eczema, hives, scabies, ringworm, chronic skin ulcers, wind-damp-heat painful obstruction, jaundice, and dark-red urine. It may also help relieve and prevent complicationsof diseases caused by the varicella-zoster virus, among other uses.
For eczema, damp sores, hives, scabies, and ringworm: Decoct with Sophora Root, Stemona Root, Sichuan Pepper, and other herbs, and use the liquid to wash the affected area. Alternatively, use together with Sophora Root, Smilax Glabra Rhizome, Rehmannia Root, and other herbs.
For jaundice and dark-red urine: Use together with Oriental Wormwood Herb, Lysimachia Herb, and other herbs.
For wind-damp-heat painful obstruction with red, swollen, hot, and painful joints: Use together with Phellodendron Bark
、Gentiana macrophylla, Honeysuckle Stem, and other herbs.
Tips
Dittany Root Bark Tea: 15–30 grams of Dittany Root Bark; 15 grams each of Salvia Root and Red Peony Root; 9 grams each of Saposhnikovia Root, Scutellaria Root, Cicada Shell, Schizonepeta, Atractylodes Rhizome, and Angelica Root; 6 grams of Licorice Root; and 3 grams of tea leaves.
Decoct all the ingredients in water and obtain 200 milliliters of the liquid. Take once daily in two divided doses.
Dittany Root Bark Stewed Chicken
30 grams each of Dittany Root Bark, Bamboo Forest Herb (Hundred-Tailed Bamboo Shoot), and Pyrola Herb, and 1 chicken.
Wash the ingredients, add water, and simmer for 3–4 hours. Season to taste and eat in several portions.
Double-White Wind-Dispelling Tea
9 grams of Dittany Root Bark; 12 grams each of White Tribulus Fruit and Rehmannia Root; 9 grams each of Black-Coated Snake, Saposhnikovia Root, and Angelica Root; and 6 grams of Licorice Root.
Add 700 milliliters of water to all the ingredients and decoct until reduced to 200 milliliters. Strain and drink frequently as a tea.
