Note: Magnolia bark is pungent, warm, and drying. Those with excessive internal heat, such as individuals with “dry cough, heat phlegm, or dry phlegm,” should combine it with heat-clearing herbs (such as coptis or baical skullcap) when using it.
Magnolia bark is also known as Sichuan magnolia bark, thick bark, and heavy bark. It is the dried bark of the magnolia tree, and is used in traditional Chinese medicine to regulate qi and transform dampness.
It has a slightly bitter and pungent flavor and a warm nature. It enters the spleen, stomach, lung, and large intestine meridians.
It promotes the movement of qi, warms and dries cold-dampness, relieves bloating and fullness, and directs qi downward to calm wheezing. It may be used forcholera,abdominal pain and distension, dampness obstructing the middle burner, cold-induced stomach qi counterflow, food stagnation and qi stagnation, constipation, persistent nausea and vomiting, diarrhea and dysentery, urinary difficulty,phlegm-fluid wheezing and coughing, cough, wheezing, and chest tightness.
1. Moves qi and dries dampness: Magnolia bark is effective at drying dampness and moving qi. It is an important herb for eliminating dampness stagnation and fullness, and is used to treat dampness obstructing the middle burner, qi stagnation in the spleen and stomach, and epigastric and abdominal distension and fullness. It is often combined with atractylodes and aged tangerine peel.
2. Relieves bloating and fullness: Magnolia bark is pungent and dispersing, directs qi downward, broadens the middle burner, and promotes the movement of food and stagnation. It is effective for disorders caused by gastrointestinal qi stagnation. For food stagnation and qi stagnation with abdominal distension and constipation, it is often combined with rhubarb and immature bitter orange; for heat-induced constipation with abdominal fullness and pain, it is often combined with rhubarb, immature bitter orange, and mirabilite.
3. Directs qi downward and calms wheezing: Magnolia bark can dry dampness and transform phlegm while directing qi downward and calming wheezing. It may be used for coughing and wheezing caused by excessive phlegm and fluids. For phlegm and fluids obstructing the lungs with coughing, wheezing, and chest tightness, it is often combined with perilla seed, aged tangerine peel, and pinellia. For preexisting asthma triggered by exposure to wind-cold, it is often combined with cinnamon twig and apricot kernel.
Tips
Severe phlegm-dampness: Increase prepared pinellia to 15g and poria to 18g.
Severe qi stagnation: Increase magnolia bark to 12g, or add 6～9g of aged tangerine peel.
Pronounced cold signs: Increase fresh ginger to 20g, or add 6～9g of cinnamon twig.
Pronounced heat signs: Reduce fresh ginger to 9g, then add 6～9g each of bamboo shavings and green forsythia fruit.
