Olives are known in Fuzhou as the “Fruit of Fortune,” symbolizing happiness and goodness. They are beloved not only for their distinctive flavor and nutritional value, but also for their deep cultural significance. They are often exchanged as gifts, symbolizing sincere friendship and the deep affection shared through hardships.
Fujian salted olives can be traced back to the Tang Dynasty, when olive cultivation was already widespread in the Fuzhou area. Olives taste bitter at first, but chewing them thoroughly produces saliva and leaves a sweet aftertaste. This initially bitter, then sweet quality has given rise to the Fuzhou saying that “olive pits are hard to part with and hard to swallow.” There are also several methods for making local salted olives. One method is to salt the olives and then dry them in the sun for use as a side dish, known as “salted fruit.” They are commonly eaten with rice porridge.

Shipping Issues
