Note: Sichuan lovage contains natural volatile oils, alkaloids, and other compounds. Because the volatile oils cannot escape from the sealed plastic bag, an oily white haze may sometimes form on the inside of the bag. This is normal.
Main differences between raw and processed Sichuan lovage
① Raw Sichuan lovage is warm in nature and is good at invigorating blood circulation, promoting qi movement, and dispelling wind and relieving pain.
②After processing, Sichuan lovage becomes warm and drying in nature and is stronger at invigorating blood circulation, removing blood stasis, dispersing cold, and relieving pain.
Tips
Chuanxiong Cha Tiao San: derived from a classic formula in the Song-dynasty work Taiping Huimin Hejiju Fang, it is effective for headaches caused by external wind pathogens. It disperses wind and cold and opens the orifices to relieve pain, and is commonly used for headaches accompanied by aversion to cold, fever, nasal congestion, and other symptoms.
Original formula: Sichuan lovage, Schizonepeta (stems removed), 12 grams each; Baizhi, Qianghuo, and toasted licorice, 6 grams each; asarum, 3 grams; saposhnikovia root, 4.5 grams; and mint, 24 grams. Grind into a fine powder. Take 6 grams each time after meals with plain tea. Today, it is commonly prepared as a decoction. Use with caution in people with yin deficiency and blood dryness or those with high blood pressure.
Crucian carp or other fish soup (for dispelling head wind): 15g Sichuan lovage slices, 15g Baizhi slices, 10g gastrodia slices, 1 white crucian carp (approximately 8oz), and appropriate amounts of ginger slices, scallion sections, cooking wine, pepper, and other ingredients.
Clean and prepare all ingredients. Heat oil in a pan and fry the fish until golden brown on both sides. Clean the pan again, then add all ingredients and approximately 1000ml water. Bring to a boil over high heat, reduce to low heat, simmer for about 30 minutes, and season to taste.
Wind-Dispelling and Dampness-Removing Soup (for stroke-related paralysis, rheumatic bone pain, and similar conditions)
Saposhnikovia root 2.5g, pubescent angelica root 3g, licorice 1.5g, angelica root 3g, dried galangal 3g, Sichuan lovage 2.5g, tangerine red 3g, red peony root 3g, pinellia prepared with ginger 3g, atractylodes and white atractylodes 3g each, poria 3g, lindera root 3g, immature bitter orange 3g, platycodon root 2.5g, coptis 3g, baical skullcap root 3g, and Baizhi 2.7g. Add 500 milliliters of water and decoct until reduced to 300 milliliters. Take on an empty stomach.
Ancient No. 1 Blood-Nourishing Formula: Goddess Siwu Decoction (Sichuan lovage, angelica, rehmannia, and peony)
Sichuan lovage 8g, angelica root 10g, prepared rehmannia root and white peony root 12g each.
1. Add 12g purple salvia root for improved blood-invigorating effects.
2. In cases of flooding or spotting, add 8g rubia root, Artemisiae Argyi, and donkey-hide gelatin, 10g each.
3. For severe menstrual pain, add 12g cyperus rhizome and 10g corydalis rhizome.
4. For accompanying qi deficiency, add 18g codonopsis root and 18g astragalus root.
5. For blood deficiency with a cold constitution, add cinnamon bark, turmeric, or 5g prepared ginger.
After washing the herbs, soak them in water for 30 minutes. Place them in a clay pot with approximately 3 bowls of water, bring to a boil, then simmer over low heat for about 30 minutes until reduced to 1 bowl. (Add brown sugar to taste.)
Note: For people with a yang constitution, replace “prepared rehmannia root” with “raw rehmannia root,” such as in cases of feeling overheated after consumption. The above formula may be customized with pork bones, lean meat, spare ribs, or chicken and an appropriate amount of water to make a nourishing medicinal soup suitable for both food and wellness.
