Note: Sichuan lovage rhizome contains natural volatile oils, alkaloids, and other compounds. Because the volatile oils cannot escape from the sealed plastic bag, an oily white haze may sometimes form on the inside of the bag. This is normal. Prepared Sichuan lovage slices are ultra-thin and break easily; please do not order if this is a concern.
Main differences between raw and prepared Sichuan lovage
① Raw Sichuan lovage is warm in nature and is particularly effective at promoting blood circulation and moving qi, as well as dispelling wind and relieving pain.
② After processing, prepared Sichuan lovage becomes warm and drying in nature and is more effective at promoting blood circulation, resolving stasis, dispelling cold, and relieving pain.
Tips
Chuanxiong Cha Tiao San: A classic formula from the Song dynasty text Taiping Huimin Hejiju Fang, it is effective for headaches caused by external wind pathogens. It dispels wind and cold, opens the orifices, and relieves pain. It is commonly used for headaches accompanied by aversion to cold, fever, nasal congestion, and other symptoms.
Original formula: Sichuan lovage, Schizonepeta (stems removed), 12 grams each; dahurian angelica root, notopterygium root, and honey-fried licorice, 6 grams each; asarum, 3 grams; saposhnikovia root, 4.5 grams; and peppermint, 24 grams. Grind all ingredients into a fine powder. Take 6 grams at a time with tea after meals. Today, it is commonly prepared as a decoction.
Use with caution in people with yin deficiency and blood dryness or those with hypertension.
Crucian carp or other fish soup (for dispelling head wind): 15g Sichuan lovage slices, 15g dahurian angelica root slices, 10g gastrodia slices, 1 white crucian carp (about 8oz), plus suitable amounts of sliced ginger, scallions, cooking wine, pepper, and other seasonings.
Clean and prepare all ingredients. Heat oil in a pan and fry the fish until golden brown on both sides. Wash the pan again, then add all ingredients and about 1000ml of water. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to low heat and simmer for about 30 minutes. Season to taste.
Wind-Dispelling and Dampness-Removing Soup (for stroke-related paralysis, rheumatic bone pain, and more)
Saposhnikovia root 2.5g, pubescent angelica root 3g, licorice 1.5g, Chinese angelica root 3g, dried lesser galangal 3g, Sichuan lovage 2.5g, tangerine pith 3g, red peony root 3g, pinellia rhizome prepared with ginger 3g, atractylodes rhizome and atractylodes macrocephala rhizome 3g each, poria 3g, lindera root 3g, immature bitter orange 3g, platycodon root 2.5g, coptis 3g, scutellaria root 3g, and dahurian angelica root 2.7g. Add 500ml of water and decoct until 300ml remains. Take on an empty stomach.
Ancient First Blood-Nourishing Formula: Goddess Si Wu Tang (Sichuan lovage, Chinese angelica root, rehmannia, and white peony root)
Sichuan lovage 8g, Chinese angelica root 10g, prepared rehmannia root and white peony root 12g each.
1. Add 12g red salvia root to enhance the blood-activating effect.
2. For excessive uterine bleeding, add 8g madder root and 10g each of mugwort leaf and donkey-hide gelatin.
3. For severe menstrual pain, add 12g cyperus rhizome and 10g corydalis rhizome.
4. If qi deficiency is also present, add 18g codonopsis root and 18g astragalus root.
5. For blood deficiency with cold constitution, add 5g cinnamon bark, turmeric, or roasted ginger.
Soak the herbs in clean water for 30 minutes, then wash them. Place them in a clay pot with about 3 bowls of water and bring to a boil. Reduce to low heat and simmer for about 30 minutes, until 1 bowl of water remains. (Add brown sugar to taste.)
Note: People with a yang-dominant constitution should replace prepared rehmannia root with raw rehmannia root, for example, if they experience excessive internal heat after taking it. The formulas above may be adjusted to personal taste by adding pork bones, lean meat, spare ribs, or chicken and a suitable amount of water to make a nourishing medicinal soup that can also be consumed as food.
