Differences among zedoary, turmeric tuber, and turmeric (Their effects are similar, but because different plant parts are used medicinally, they differ somewhat in meridian tropism and primary indications.)
All 3 belong to perennial turmeric plants of the ginger family. There are 4 varieties: Peng zedoary, Guangxi zedoary, Wenyujin, and turmeric.
① When the rhizomes of Peng zedoary, Guangxi zedoary, or Wenyujin are used medicinally, they are collectively called “zedoary.”
② When the tuberous roots of Peng zedoary, Guangxi zedoary, Wenyujin, or turmeric are used medicinally, they are collectively called “turmeric tuber.”

Effects and Uses
Tips
Ingredients: 15 g each of zedoary and anemarrhena, 9 g of burreed rhizome, 30 g of houttuynia, and 100 g of rice.
Preparation: Wrap all the ingredients in cheesecloth, decoct in water, and use the strained liquid to cook the washed rice into congee.
Ingredients: 25 g zedoary, 1 pork heart, and an appropriate amount of salt.
Preparation: Wash the zedoary and pork heart, slice them, place them in a clay pot, add an appropriate amount of water, simmer together for 30 minutes, and season to taste.
Li Zhong Decoction from Records of Medicine with Reference to Chinese and Western Medicine: “Treats women’s absent or obstructed menstruation, incomplete postpartum lochia discharge, and abdominal masses and accumulations (such as uterine fibroids and ovarian cysts), resulting in heat from yin deficiency, cold from yang deficiency, poor appetite, fatigue cough, and multiple simultaneous deficiency syndromes. After taking more than ten doses of this decoction, the deficiency syndromes recede; after thirty doses, the stagnant blood may be completely dissipated. It also treats blood depletion with amenorrhea in unmarried women. It further treats consumptive disease in men, as well as all types of visceral masses and accumulations, qi constraint, Spleen weakness, fullness, oppression, and distention that prevent eating.”
Raw astragalus root 9 g, codonopsis root 6 g, atractylodes 6 g, raw Chinese yam 15 g, trichosanthes root 12 g, anemarrhena 12 g, burreed rhizome 9 g, zedoary 9 g, and raw chicken gizzard lining 9 g. Use 3 bowls of water, decoct until nearly done, add a small amount of good vinegar, boil for several more cycles, and take.
If it causes a feeling of oppression, remove the atractylodes; if qi feels weak, reduce the burreed rhizome and zedoary by 3 g each; for diarrhea, replace the anemarrhena with white peony root and increase the atractylodes to 12 g; for heat, add several grams each of raw rehmannia root and asparagus tuber; for cold, reduce the anemarrhena and trichosanthes root by half or omit them; for severe cold, add 6 g each of cinnamon bark (finely ground and taken after being mixed in) and aconite root; for severe, hard blood stasis, add 6 g of raw leech (not prepared by roasting); if the person is robust and has no other illness and the formula is used solely to disperse abdominal masses and accumulations, remove the Chinese yam; in unmarried women and women who have not given birth, if this formula is used, use the burreed rhizome and zedoary sparingly, reduce the anemarrhena by half, and add several grams of raw rehmannia root to moisten and nourish depleted blood; if the person has blood stasis but no abdominal masses and menstruation has not yet ceased, even in women who have given birth, use less burreed rhizome and zedoary; if the patient is emaciated and weak with a deficient, rapid pulse, remove the burreed rhizome and zedoary and replace the chicken gizzard lining with 12 g, as this herb can transform stagnant blood without damaging qi. Once qi and blood gradually strengthen, if the blood stasis has not been completely dissipated, burreed rhizome and zedoary may be used later. For consumptive disease in men, burreed rhizome and zedoary should likewise be used sparingly, or chicken gizzard lining may be substituted.”
