Cinnamon twigAlso known as Chinese cinnamon, cassia cinnamon, fungus cinnamon, tube cinnamon, and others, it is the dried young branch ofCinnamomum cassia, a plant in the Lauraceae family. Its active medicinal constituents are mainly found in the bark; the younger and finer the twig, the greater the proportion of bark (the larger the woody core, the lower the active constituent content). It has a stronger spicy aroma and is a medicinal herb for relieving exterior symptoms caused by wind-cold.

Spicy and sweet in flavor, warm in nature; enters the heart, lung, and bladder meridians.

It induces sweating and relieves muscle tension, warms and unblocks the meridians, assists yang transformation of qi, and directs rebellious qi downward.
Its spicy, sweet, and warming nature dispels cold. It primarily enters the lung and bladder meridians, where it helps diffuse yang qi and promote smooth circulation of nutritive blood, supporting the defensive qi, securing the exterior, inducing sweating, and relieving muscle tension. It can be used to treat exterior wind-cold conditions, and also disperses and unblocks with its warming nature, warming the meridians and dispelling cold. It is commonly used to treat cold pain in the epigastric and abdominal regions, menstrual blockage due to blood cold, and painful joint obstruction. Its sweet and warm nature can warm spleen yang and assist water transport, warm kidney yang and support intestinal qi transformation, and also treat phlegm retention, edema, and similar conditions.

Modern pharmacological studies show that cinnamon twig not only promotes sweating, reduces fever, and provides sedative and analgesic effects, but also dilates cutaneous blood vessels, combats pathogenic microorganisms, reduces inflammation, prevents convulsions, increases coronary blood flow, strengthens the heart, promotes urination, enhances gastrointestinal motility, and inhibitstumors, among other pharmacological effects.

Original formula for “Cinnamon Twig and Licorice Decoction” in Treatise on Cold Damage: 12 grams of cinnamon twig, 6 grams of honey-fried licorice root, add approximately 600 milliliters of water, boil down to 200 milliliters, and drink warm.
It warms and supplements heart yang and promotes yang transformation of qi. It is primarily used to treat palpitations beneath the heart caused by excessive sweating, and pressing the heart with crossed hands (pressing the chest with both hands to relieve discomfort); it is also used for palpitations, chest tightness, aversion to cold, and a weak pulse caused by insufficient heart yang. Note: People with heart yin deficiency or stomach yin deficiency should not use it.

 

In clinical practice, practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine generally adjust the formula according to the patient's condition.

Shortness of breath due to qi deficiency: add ginseng, astragalus, and similar herbs;

Aversion to cold due to yang deficiency: add dried ginger, aconite, and similar herbs;

Dizziness due to blood deficiency: add angelica root, longan pulp, and similar herbs;

Restlessness of the heart and spirit: add sour jujube kernels, dragon bone, polygala root, and similar herbs;


Original formula for “Cinnamon Twig Decoction” in “Treatise on Cold Damage”: 9 grams each of cinnamon twig, peony root, and fresh ginger; 6 grams of honey-fried licorice root; and 12 red dates (pitted).
It is primarily used to treat “Taiyang wind-strike syndrome,” that is, an exterior-deficiency syndrome caused by externally contracted wind-cold. Typical symptoms include fever, aversion to wind, headache, sweating, and a floating, relaxed pulse.( People with yin deficiency and excessive internal heat should not take it.)
 Add approximately 6 bowls of water and boil over high heat until 2 bowls remain. Adults should drink 1 bowl warm on an empty stomach every three hours; children should take half the amount. Mild sweating may occur after taking it. If the cold symptoms improve after the first bowl, there is no need to take the second bowl. After taking this decoction, drink a little rice porridge to help the medicinal effects reach the extremities. This may help clear the cold virus from the body and promote a rapid recovery.
 
Note: When using this formula, pay attention to the patient's cold symptoms. It is suitable when a person with a cold is sweating, has generalized muscle aches, dislikes exposure to wind, and has a fever together with a poor appetite.
