Raw Rehmannia Root and Prepared Rehmannia Root come from the same plant and have no contraindications when used together. The difference lies only in their processing methods. Raw Rehmannia Root primarily clears heat and cools the blood, while Prepared Rehmannia Root is especially effective for nourishing yin and replenishing the blood. Cooking them together in soup or congee can enhance their blood-nourishing effects, while also helping clear heat, reduce internal fire, and improve sleep. Both may help strengthen bones, and using them together may provide better results.
Specifically:
1. Raw Rehmannia Root:is a heat-clearing herb. It is bitter and cold in nature and enters the Heart, Liver, and Kidney meridians. It clears heat and cools the blood, nourishes yin and promotes the production of body fluids, and helps calm the fetus. It may be used for heat entering the nutrient and blood levels, warm-toxin rashes, vomiting blood, and nosebleeds, yin-deficiency internal heat, heat-related illness that damages yin, crimson tongue with irritability and thirst, fluid deficiency with constipation, steaming-bone fever, and internal-heat thirst.
2. After processing, the nature of Prepared Rehmannia Root changes from cold to warm, and its flavor changes from bitter to sweet. Its effects therefore shift from clearing to tonifying, with its main functions being nourishing yin, replenishing the blood, benefiting the essence, and filling the marrow.
Prepared Rehmannia Rootis sweet and warm in nature and enters the Liver and Kidney meridians. It is a deficiency-tonifying herbprimarily used to replenish the blood. The Classic Blood-Nourishing Formula: Women's Four-Substance Decoction (Ligusticum, Angelica, Rehmannia, and Peony)
Chuanxiong rhizome 8g, Chinese angelica root 10g, Prepared Rehmannia Root and white peony root 12g each.
1. Add 12g of Danshen root (to promote blood circulation) for enhanced effects.
2. For excessive uterine bleeding: add 8g of madder root, plus 10g each of mugwort leafand donkey-hide gelatin.
3. For severe menstrual cramps: add 12g of cyperus rhizome and 10g of corydalis rhizome.
4. For concurrent qi deficiency: add 18g each of codonopsis root and astragalus root.
5. For blood deficiency with coldness: add 5g of cinnamon bark, turmeric, or prepared ginger.
Soak the herbs in clean water for 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Place them in a clay pot, add approximately 3 bowls of water, and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for about 30 minutes, until 1 bowl of liquid remains. (Add brown sugar to taste.)
Note: People with a yang-excess constitution should replace “Prepared Rehmannia Root” with “Raw Rehmannia Root,” such as those who experience excessive internal heat after taking it. Based on personal taste, the above formula may be prepared as a soup with pork bones, lean meat, spare ribs, or chicken, along with an appropriate amount of water, for both dietary and wellness purposes.
