Do not use on broken skin or ulcers, or in patients with a tendency to bleed or bleeding disorders. Use with caution or reduce the dosage in cases of severe deficiency of qi and blood.

Safflower is also known as red-blue flower, thorn safflower, and grass safflower. It is the dried flower of safflower, an annual herb in the Asteraceae family. It is mainly produced in Xinjiang, Tibet, Hunan, Hebei, and other regions. Xinjiang safflower is renowned for its bright color and seeds with a high oil content. In particular, the safflower from Emin County is known as the “Hometown of Safflower in China” because of its unique geographical location and climatic conditions. It is renowned for its superior quality and is one of Xinjiang’s four prized medicinal herbs.
Safflower is an herb that promotes blood circulation and resolves blood stasis. It is pungent and warm in nature and enters the Heart and Liver meridians.
It is especially effective at promoting blood circulation, moisturizing dryness, dispelling stasis and fading blemishes, regulating menstruation, and reducing swelling and pain. It may also help lower blood lipids and blood pressure. It can be selected for various blood-stasis conditions and is particularly suitable when cold is present. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is commonly used for amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, persistent postpartum lochia, abdominal pain, retained lochia, abdominal masses, chest obstruction and heart pain, blood stasis, stabbing pain in the chest and hypochondrium, rib and abdominal pain, subcutaneous bruising, hemiplegia after stroke, limb pain or stasis-related pain caused by falls and injuries, and sores with swelling and pain. External foot baths may also help dispel wind and remove dampness.
Tips
Foot baths or hot compresses: Primarily promote blood circulation through the channels and collaterals and reduce swelling and pain.
Suitable for: chronic lower back and leg pain, cold pain in the knee joints, frozen shoulder, neck soreness and pain, muscle strain, bruising caused by sprains or impacts, and pain from old injuries. Cold lower abdominal pain before menstruation, menstrual blood clots, and poor menstrual flow. Cold hands and feet, coldness in the lower limbs, numb hands and feet, and insomnia with excessive dreaming caused by impaired qi and blood circulation.
Proper foot-bath method: Place 10–15 g of safflower in a gauze bag, add water, bring to a boil, then simmer for about 15 minutes. Pour into a basin, and when the water cools to 40–45°C, soak the feet up to the ankles for 20–30 minutes.
Note: For managing coldness in the uterus, dysmenorrhea, and similar conditions, it is best to continue foot baths for 3–7 days before menstruation. When choosing the foot-bath method, 【Do not】also drink it as a tea every day. Combining both methods will not produce twice the benefits, and because safflower is potent, it may instead very easily cause adverse effects.
Proper hot-compress method: Place about 10 g of safflower in a gauze bag, add a small amount of water, bring to a boil, then simmer for about 15 minutes. Apply the warm safflower decoction, together with the gauze bag, directly to sore joints or areas of bruising, repeatedly wiping and gently massaging the affected area.

Safflower + club moss herb and speranskia herb (dispels wind and dampness and relaxes the sinews and promotes circulation through the channels)
Safflower + Chinese angelica root and red peony root (enhances blood circulation and reduces swelling and pain)
For amenorrhea and dysmenorrhea: Use alone, decocted in wine, or combine with Chinese angelica root
and sappanwood.
For chest obstruction and heart pain: Commonly combined with salvia root, Sichuan lovage rhizome, dalbergia heartwood, and other herbs.
For injuries from falls or blows and stasis-related pain in the muscles and bones: It may be combined with Chinese angelica root, arisaema rhizome,
and dahurian angelica root.
For sores with swelling and pain: It may be combined with forsythia fruit, Chinese violet, red peony root,
and other herbs.
