Danshen is also known as red sage root,Qixian grass, red root, mu yang ru, ben ma grass, and other names. It is a blood-activating and stasis-resolving herb consisting of the dried roots and rhizomes of the Lamiaceae plant Danshen.
The surface is reddish-brown or dark reddish-brown, rough, and marked with longitudinal wrinkles. A chrysanthemum-like pattern on the cut surface is considered desirable. The outer skin of old wild roots is loose and often purplish-red, becoming deep purplish-red after processing. The herb is hard and brittle, with a loose cut surface and fissures in the center. Danshen is also classified as purple Danshen, white Danshen, and mouse-tail Danshen. It is further divided into processed Danshen, which has undergone sweating, and raw Danshen. They are used for very similar conditions, but there are also some differences. Sweated Danshen becomes warmer in nature after processing and is better at promoting blood circulation and regulating menstruation, such as for irregular menstruation or restlessness and insomnia. Raw Danshen is stronger at promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis.
Purple DanshenIt has a bitter taste, is slightly cold in nature, and enters the Heart and Liver meridians.
It is traditionally used to nourish the blood and calm the spirit, promote blood circulation and remove stasis, clear the Heart and cool the blood, regulate qi, and relieve pain. It may be used for chest, rib, and hypochondriac pain; rheumatic arthralgia; abdominal masses; sores and swellings; injuries from falls and bruises; heat entering the blood level; skin eruptions; loss of consciousness and agitation; palpitations and insomnia; irregular menstruation; amenorrhea; dysmenorrhea; and postpartum pain due to blood stasis.

An Ancient Formula for Nourishing the Blood: Goddess Four-Substance Decoction (Chuanxiong, Danggui, Shudi, and Baishao)
Chuanxiong 8g, Danggui 10g, prepared Rehmannia root and white peony root 12g each.
1. Add 12g purple Danshen to enhance the effect of promoting blood circulation.
2. In cases of heavy or prolonged uterine bleeding, add 8g rubia root, and 10g each mugwort leaf and donkey-hide gelatin.
3. For severe menstrual cramps, add 12g cyperus rhizome and 10g corydalis rhizome.
4. If accompanied by qi deficiency, add 18g Codonopsis root and 18g astragalus root.
5. For blood deficiency with a cold constitution, add 5g cinnamon bark, turmeric, or prepared ginger.
Soak the herbs in clean water for 30 minutes, then rinse them. Place them in an earthenware pot with approximately 3 bowls of water. Bring to a boil, then simmer over low heat for about 30 minutes, until reduced to 1 bowl of water. (Add brown sugar for flavor.)
Note: For people with a heat-prone constitution, replace “prepared Rehmannia root” with “raw Rehmannia root,” such as when taking the formula causes excessive internal heat. The formula may be prepared according to personal taste by adding pork bones, lean pork, spare ribs, or chicken, along with an appropriate amount of water, to make a nourishing medicinal soup that can be used as both food and medicine.
