Peony root is divided into two different Chinese medicinal materials: “White Peony Root” and “Red Peony Root” (wild red peony root is also known as Jing Red Peony Root). Ancient texts state: “There is only one type of peony root, namely the dried root of the Ranunculaceae plant peony; there was no clear distinction between white peony root and red peony root.” Later generations also inaccurately classified them as red-flowering plants being called red peony root and white-flowering plants being called white peony root. In fact, regardless of the flower color, both are roots of the Ranunculaceae plant peony. However, because modern processing methods differ, the names, properties, meridian affiliations, and indications recorded in Chinese pharmacopoeias also differ.
Wild red peony roothas a rough, brownish-brown outer skin. Some pieces haveloose skin that is easily shed, and the cut surface has distinct radial patterns (chrysanthemum-heart pattern).
The texture is brittle and hard. After being harvested and washed, it is directly sliced and dried, and is used as a heat-clearing and blood-regulating medicinal herb.Red peony root is bitter and dispersing, and slightly cold and clearing. It enters the Liver meridian, clears heat, and disperses stasis. It both clears Liver fire and cools the blood, while promoting blood circulation and resolving blood stasis. It combines the functions of cooling blood heat, clearing Liver fire, and dispersing stagnant blood. It may be appropriately used for blood heat, blood stasis, or Liver fire, whether occurring alone or together, and is particularly suitable for pain caused by blood heat with stasis, blood stasis with heat, or Liver fire accompanied by stasis.

Tips
1. For excessive white or yellow vaginal discharge in women, dysmenorrhea, abdominal pain, and irregular menstruation: 5g red peony root, 3g cyperus rhizome, and 3g flower tea. Steep in 250mL boiling water and drink; continue steeping until the flavor becomes weak.
2. To remove facial acne: 20g red peony root, 50g mung beans, 40g poria, 15g Chinese violet, and 150g lean pork or pork ribs. Wash all ingredients, place them in a clay pot, add an appropriate amount of water, bring to a boil over high heat, then simmer for 2 hours and season to taste.
3. To cool the blood, remove stasis, reduce swelling, and relieve pain: 10g red peony root, 10 red dates, and 5g black tea. Add an appropriate amount of water to the red peony root and bring to a boil. Add the red dates and boil for another 10 minutes, then add the black tea.
4. For severe dysentery with unbearable abdominal pain: 15g each of red peony root, garden burnet root, and Amur cork tree bark, decoct in water and take orally.
