Wild astragalus generally grows in mountains and the countryside. Because it grows without human intervention and takes many years to mature, its center may sometimes wither due to insufficient water (this is its most distinctive feature, not insect damage).Wild astragalus grows slowly and is scarce; combined with its high medicinal value and efficacy, it has become increasingly popular among health enthusiasts in recent years.
Astragalus is also known as northern astragalus, Bei qi, and huangqi.The dried root of the leguminous plants Mongolian astragalus or membranous astragalus. It is a perennial herb and a qi-tonifying medicinal herb.
Its nature is sweet and slightly warm, and it enters the spleen and lung meridians.
According to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, astragalus has the effects of replenishing qi and raising yang, securing the exterior and stopping sweating, promoting urination and reducing edema, generating fluids and nourishing the blood, moving stagnation and relieving painful obstruction, supporting detoxification and expelling pus, astringing sores and promoting tissue regeneration, enhancing immunity, regulating metabolism, protecting the cardiovascular system, combating fatigue, and providing antioxidant effects.
Used for all conditions involving qi deficiency and blood depletion, including yang deficiency, fatigue, poor appetite and loose stools, sinking middle qi, chronic diarrhea and rectal prolapse, bloody stools and uterine bleeding, exterior-deficiency spontaneous sweating (during the day), edema, internal-heat thirst, sallow complexion from blood deficiency, hemiplegia, painful numbness from obstruction, sores that are slow to ulcerate, chronic ulcers that do not heal, and coughing from lung deficiency.
Treats weak spleen qi, fatigue, lack of strength, poor appetite, and loose stools; may be used alone or withGinsengused synergistically.

Health tips
Bupleurum and astragalus decoction is used for rheumatism and edema: fangfeng root 30 g, astragalus 15 g, prepared licorice 6 g, and atractylodes 9 g. Add fresh ginger, red dates, and an appropriate amount of water; decoct and take.
For frequent urination, kidney deficiency, and related conditions: steep or boil 5–10 g each of prepared polygonatum, astragalus, and goji berries in water, or add them to meat soup while simmering. (nourishes yin, tonifies kidney yang, and replenishes essence and blood)
For people with qi and blood deficiency, cold constitutions, or weak spleen and stomach function: astragalus root 12 g, angelica root 6 g, dried red date slices 6 g, and 3 slices of dried ginger. Add an appropriate amount of water (meat slices and salt may be added) and boil for about 30 minutes. Suitable 2–3 times per week, or stew with meat for 3 hours and season to taste. (warms the middle and dispels cold, replenishes qi and blood, and strengthens the spleen and stomach)
