Artemisiae Argyi Charcoal is a processed preparation made from the dried leaves of mugwort (Artemisia Argyi), a plant in the Asteraceae family. Compared with raw mugwort leaves, its pungent dispersing nature is transformed into an astringent quality. Traditional Chinese medicine describes it as: “Warms the channels without being drying, astringes without being cloying, and is an essential medicine for bleeding due to deficiency-cold.” It is classified as a hemostatic under blood-regulating medicines.

Bitter and astringent in taste; warm in nature. Enters the Liver, Spleen, and Kidney meridians.

Its three core effects are astringing to stop bleeding (bleeding stops when it turns black),warming the channels and securing the thoroughfare vessel (warming without being drying), and dispelling cold to relieve pain (regulating residual cold).

Primarily treats all types of “bleeding due to deficiency-cold” (for example: bleeding that is pale red or purplish-dark, thin and watery in texture, a pale complexion, aversion to cold, and cold hands and feet):

1、Gynecological bleeding disorders (excessive uterine bleeding, heavy menstruation, threatened miscarriage)

① Dysfunctional uterine bleeding (profuse or prolonged bleeding): sudden heavy bleeding outside the menstrual period, or menstrual bleeding that continues lightly for more than ten days. If it is a cold pattern, Artemisiae Argyi Charcoal is an essential medicine.
