Saposhnikovia root is also known as northern Saposhnikovia root, frontier Saposhnikovia root,side Saposhnikovia root,Tong Yun, Hui Yun, Hui Cao, Bai Zhi, Bai Zhong, and other names. It is mainly produced in Heilongjiang, Jilin, Inner Mongolia, Hebei, Shanxi, and other regions. According to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, only Saposhnikovia root produced in Inner Mongolia and Hebei meets the required quality standards. It is a perennial herb of the genus Saposhnikovia in the family Apiaceae,and is used in traditional Chinese medicine to release the exterior and dispel wind-dampness.
It has a pungent, sweet flavor and is slightly warm in nature.It enters the bladder, spleen, and liver meridians.
According to the Compendium of Materia Medica, Saposhnikovia root isan extraordinary herb for dispelling wind and dampness. It promotes sweating and releases the exterior, dispels wind and overcomes dampness, calms and relieves pain, stops sweating and diarrhea, and promotes bowel movements and menstruation. It is mainly used for externally contracted wind-cold, fever, headache, rheumatic aching and pain in the bones and joints, wind rash and itching, rheumatic bi pain, tetanus, spleen deficiency with excessive dampness, and other conditions. Modern research has also found that it has various pharmacological effects, including anti-allergic, immune-regulating, anticoagulant, and antitumor effects.
For wind-cold-dampness bi syndrome, it is commonly used together with clematis herb, Ligusticum wallichii, and angelica root.

Saposhnikovia root 2.5 grams, pubescent angelica root 3 grams, licorice root 1.5 grams, angelica root 3 grams, dried galangal 3 grams, Ligusticum wallichii 2.5 grams, tangerine pith 3 grams, red peony root 3 grams, prepared pinellia tuber 3 grams, atractylodes rhizome and white atractylodes rhizome 3 grams each, poria 3 grams, lindera root 3 grams, bitter orange 3 grams, platycodon root 2.5 grams, coptis root 3 grams, scutellaria root 3 grams, and angelica dahurica root 2.7 grams. Add 500 milliliters of water and decoct until reduced to 300 milliliters. Take on an empty stomach.
Saposhnikovia Root Dampness-Dispelling Porridge:Decoct 20 grams of Saposhnikovia root and 15 grams of fangji, then remove the herbs and add 50 grams of coix seeds and 100 grams of japonica rice to the liquid to make porridge. Eat daily to help relieve rheumatic pain.
[Jiu Wei Qiang Huo Decoction] originates from the Yuan dynasty medical text “What Medicine Can’t Know,” and is one of the most representative classic formulas among traditional Chinese medicine exterior-releasing formulas throughout history. It is known as a model formula for “releasing the exterior and warming the interior, dispersing external wind-cold, and clearing internal heat.” It is primarily used for exterior wind-cold-dampness with internal heat accumulation: aversion to cold, fever, absence of sweating, headache and neck stiffness, aching and pain in the limbs, a bitter taste with slight thirst, a white or slightly yellow tongue coating, and a floating pulse.
Formula: Notopterygium root, Saposhnikovia root, and atractylodes rhizome 9 grams each; asarum 3 grams; Ligusticum wallichii, angelica dahurica root, rehmannia root, scutellaria root, and licorice root 6 grams each. In modern clinical practice, fresh ginger or dried ginger3 slicesis often added and decocted together.
- Soaking: Place the washed herbs in an earthenware pot, add cold water until it is 2-3 centimeters above the herbs, and soak for 30 minutes.
- Decoction: Bring to a boil over high heat, then reducethe heat and simmer for 15 ~ 20 minutes. Do not simmer it for a long time like a tonic decoction.
- Strain and collect the liquid: Pour out the decoction. It can usually be decocted a second time (for the second decoction, add just enough water to cover the dregs and simmer for 15 minutes after the water boils). Combine the two decoctions, yielding approximately 300 ~ 400 milliliters, and take in two doses 30 minutes after meals, “hot or warm.” (It is recommended to go to bed and cover yourself with a blanket to sweat.)
