Chinese herbal achyranthes root is divided into Huai Achyranthes and Sichuan Achyranthes. Sichuan Achyranthes, also known as sweet achyranthes and Du Achyranthes, is the dried root of the Amaranthaceae plant Sichuan Achyranthes.
It has a sweet, slightly bitter taste and a neutral nature; it enters the Liver and Kidney meridians.
It helps disperse blood stasis, promote menstruation, improve joint mobility, promote urination, clear urinary obstruction, and enhance immunity. It is used for amenorrhea, abdominal masses due to blood stasis, irregular menstruation, retained placenta, injuries from falls and impacts, rheumatic pain, stiff joints, weakness of the lower limbs, flaccid feet and muscle spasms, blood in the urine, painful urination, frequent and urgent urination, burning urination, postpartum abdominal pain, and abdominal masses.
The Compendium of Chinese Herbal Medicines states: “Used to treat rheumatic pain in the lower back and knees, Kashin-Beck disease, sequelae of poliomyelitis in children, painful urination, blood in the urine, amenorrhea due to blood stasis, difficult labor, retained placenta, and postpartum abdominal pain caused by blood stasis.”
Differences Between Sichuan Achyranthes and Huai Achyranthes
Both are included in the Chinese pharmacopoeia and belong to the Amaranthaceae family, classified as herbs that invigorate blood and dispel blood stasis. However, because they differ in origin and variety, their primary effects differ.
Sichuan Achyranthes: Its effects focus on invigorating blood, dispelling blood stasis, promoting menstruation, and promoting urination.
Huai Achyranthes: Its effects focus on nourishing the Liver and Kidneys and strengthening the sinews and bones; it is especially suitable for Liver and Kidney deficiency and weakness of the sinews and bones.
Tips
For dispelling blood stasis and promoting menstruation: It is commonly combined with Chinese angelica root, Sichuan lovage root, safflower, and other herbs to enhance its blood-invigorating, menstruation-promoting, and pain-relieving effects.
For injuries from falls and impacts: It is commonly combined with frankincense, dragon’s blood resin, and other herbs to invigorate blood, dispel blood stasis, and relieve pain.
For rheumatic pain in the lower back and knees and impaired joint mobility: It is commonly used with Chinese taxillus herb, dipsacus root, pubescent angelica root, and other herbs.
For blood strangury, blood in the urine, and related conditions: It is commonly used with akebia stem, fringed pink, and other herbs.
For damp-heat accumulation in the lower burner and swollen, painful joints: It is commonly combined with phellodendron bark, atractylodes rhizome, and other herbs.
