Contraindications: This product is bitter, drying, and mildly warm. Use with caution if you have damp-heat or exuberant fire due to yin deficiency.
Dipsacus aliases: Sichuan dipsacus, Sichuan duan, “bone-joining herb,” and others. It is the dried root of Dipsacus asper, and is used as a tonic for deficiency.
It is bitter, pungent, and mildly warm. It enters the Liver and Kidney meridians.
Sichuan dipsacus is sweet and mildly warm, while its bitterness drains and its pungency disperses. It supplements while promoting movement, providing nourishment without causing stagnation. It helps tonify the Liver and Kidneys, strengthen sinews and bones, support the healing of damaged sinews and bones,invigorate blood and resolve stasis, reduce swelling and relieve pain, drain pus, and clear heat and detoxify the body. It is an important herb for tonifying the Liver and Kidneys in internal medicine, stopping excessive uterine bleeding in gynecology, and treating fractures and other injuries in traumatology. It may beused for Liver and Kidney deficiency, soreness and weakness of the lower back and knees, wind-damp painful obstruction, injuries from falls or impacts, sinew andbone fractures, excessive uterine bleeding, vaginal discharge,threatened miscarriage,nocturnal emissions, involuntary seminal emission,dizziness and tinnitus, among other conditions.

Dosage for decoctions or infusions: 9–15g
① Dipsacus combined with goji berries: Tonifies the Kidneys and nourishes essence
②Dipsacus combined with astragalus: Tonifies the Kidneys and replenishes qi
③Dipsacus combined with prepared cistanche: Tonifies the Kidneys and strengthens yang
④Dipsacus combined with dodder seeds: Tonifies the Kidneys and secures essence
⑤ Dipsacus combined with “less than 3g of asarum”: Tonifies the Kidneys, strengthens sinews, dispels wind, and relieves pain
Tonifies Kidney yang and strengthens the sinews and bones: 8oz lamb kidneys, 15g Dipsacus, 2–3 tablespoons rice wine or cooking wine, and 3 slices of ginger. Add enough water to cover and simmer for 3 hours.
Tonifies Kidney yang, strengthens the sinews and bones, and replenishes qi and nourishes the blood: ½ chicken, 4oz lean meat, 30g Dipsacus, 15g goji berries, 30g eucommia bark, 20g astragalus, and 10g angelica root. Add 3–4 bowls of water and simmer for at least 3 hours.
“Zhang Xichun’s Famous Formula for Preventing Miscarriage”
This formula comes from Medical Insights from a Chinese Medicine Practitioner with Reference to Western Medicine, written by the renowned Qing Dynasty physician Zhang Xichun of Hebei. It consists of four Chinese herbs: dodder seeds, Chinese taxillus herb, Dipsacus, and donkey-hide gelatin. It may tonify the Kidneys and replenish essence, stabilize and secure the fetus, and is used for threatened miscarriage, insecure fetal stability, lower-back soreness and abdominal heaviness, and bleeding or spotting during pregnancy; recurrent miscarriage; irregular menstruation; and other issues.
Pill dosage and directions: 120g dodder seeds, 60g Chinese taxillus herb, 60g Dipsacus, and 60g donkey-hide gelatin make one batch. Form into pills and take 6g (20 pills) with warm water twice daily.
Preparation:
① Grind the first three herbs into a fine powder and dissolve the donkey-hide gelatin in water.
② Mix the powdered herbs with the dissolved donkey-hide gelatin and form into pills,0.3g per pill.
Decoction dosage and directions: 30g dodder seeds, 15g Dipsacus, 15g Chinese taxillus herb, and 15g donkey-hide gelatin. Boil one dose in water and take orally in two divided doses each day.
