【About】 Pinellia tuber is the dried tuber of Pinellia ternata of the Araceae family. According to different processing methods, it is divided into "Qing-ban-xia, Jiang-ban-xia, and Fa-ban-xia." It is an essential medicine for treating phlegm-dampness, cold-phlegm, and vomiting. It is suitable for all syndromes caused by phlegm-dampness, especially when accompanied by cold; when accompanied by heat, it should be combined with bitter and cold substances. The Chinese Pharmacopoeia classifies it as a medicine for warming and dissolving cold-phlegm under the category of medicines for dissolving phlegm, stopping cough, and relieving wheezing.
【Chinese Medicine Properties】
1. Nature: Pungent and warm; toxic.
2. Target Organs: Directly acts on the spleen, stomach, and lungs.
Pinellia tuber is pungent, dispersing, warm, drying, toxic, and has strong potency. Therefore, pharmaceutical factories and clinical herbalists use processed pinellia tuber to remove its toxicity. It can be used internally by boiling the juice or stewing soup.

Differences Among Variations
Pinellia Tuber (Raw Pinellia): Unprocessed, best for external use, with stronger power to attack toxicity, resolve nodules, and reduce swelling.
Qing-ban-xia: Processed from raw pinellia with alum. The cut surface is white, brittle and easily broken, with a slight odor, bitter and astringent taste. It has the strongest power to dry dampness and dissolve phlegm. Mostly used for damp-phlegm cough, internal binding of phlegm-heat, and vomiting due to wind-phlegm.
Jiang-ban-xia: Processed from raw pinellia with alum and ginger juice. It appears brownish-yellow or pale yellowish-brown. Because it is thoroughly boiled, the cut surface shows a horn-like texture (semi-transparent), and its texture is brittle and firm. It tastes mild, slightly bitter, with a faint pungent flavor. It has better power to warm the middle, dissolve phlegm, direct reversed energy downward, and stop vomiting. Commonly used for vomiting due to phlegm-retained fluid, stomach fullness, etc.
Fa-ban-xia: Processed from raw pinellia with lime water and licorice. The exterior is yellow, pale yellowish-white, or golden yellow, coated with a thin layer of powder. It is good at harmonizing the spleen and stomach, drying dampness, and dissolving phlegm.
