Dosage: 6–15 g; take 3–6 g of powder mixed with water, 2–3 times daily. For external use, grind into powder and apply as appropriate.

Peony root is classified as two different Chinese medicinal materials: “white peony root” and “red peony root” (wild red peony root is also called Chinese red peony root). Ancient texts state: “There is only one kind of peony root, the dried root of the buttercup-family plant peony, with no clear distinction between white and red peony root.” Later claims that peony flowering red is called red peony root while peony flowering white is called white peony root are inaccurate. In fact, regardless of the flower color, both are the roots of the buttercup-family plant peony (Paeonia lactiflora). However, because modern processing methods and producing regions differ, the names, properties, meridian affiliations, and indications recorded in Chinese pharmacopoeias also vary.

Tips
Face mask or topical application: It is recommended to mix white peony root powder with purified water, honey, egg white, or milk to form a paste, then apply it to the face or affected skin. Rinse thoroughly after 15–20 minutes. It can effectively soothe inflammation or improve dull skin tone. Do not use if you have skin allergies.
For menstrual pain caused by qi and blood deficiency:15 g white peony root, 10 g eclipta, 20 g each angelica root and astragalus root, 100 g japonica rice, and an appropriate amount of brown sugar.Decoct white peony root, eclipta, angelica root, and astragalus root for 15 minutes. Strain out the dregs, retain the liquid, and use it to cook congee with japonica rice. Add an appropriate amount of brown sugar.
For insomnia and palpitations caused by heart and liver blood deficiency:15 g each white peony root and sour jujube seed, 9 g polygala root, 10 g poria, and 5 pitted red dates. Repeatedly boil in water and drink as a tea substitute.
