Japanese climbing fern spores (Lygodium japonicum) are obtained from a perennial climbing herbaceous fern in the Lygodiaceae family and Lygodium genus. In autumn, before the spores fall, the stems and leaves are harvested and sun-dried, then rubbed to remove the spores, with the stems and leaves discarded. They arepowdery and brownish-yellow or light brownish-yellow. They are lightweight and feel smooth when rubbed between the fingers, easily slipping through the fingers when held in the hand. They have a faint aroma and a mild taste.
Sweet, salty, and cold. Enters the Bladder and Small Intestine meridians. It is a well-known herb for promoting urination and relieving urinary difficulty.
It clears damp-heat, promotes urination and relieves pain, reduces water retention and swelling, provides antioxidant effects, and helps lower blood sugar. It is commonly used to treat various urinary tract stones and infections, such as painful, stone-induced, bloody, or milky urine, as well as painful, difficult urination. For external use, it may be used for shingles (commonly called “snake skin”) and burns.

“Three Golds Stone-Expelling Decoction” is a classic and commonly used formula in modern traditional Chinese medicine urology for promoting the passage of stones. In clinical practice,practitioners adjust the formula according to the size and location of the stones and the patient’s individual constitution:
Christina loosestrife herb: 30 g ~ 60 g
Japanese climbing fern spores: 15 g ~ 30 g (must be decocted in a bag, tied securely in a fine-mesh gauze bag)
Chicken gizzard lining:15 g ~ 30 g (ground into powder and swallowed with the decoction or decocted together with the other herbs)
Pyrrosia leaf: 15 g ~ 20 g
Winter mallow seeds: 15 g ~ 30 g
Talc: 15 g ~ 24 g (must be decocted in a bag, tied securely in a fine-mesh gauze bag)
Sichuan cyathula root: 12 g ~ 15 g
Amber powder: 1.5 g ~ 3 g (must be taken as a powder mixed into liquid; under no circumstances should it be decocted in the pot)
Proper Decoction Method:
① Separate:Place the Japanese climbing fern spores and talc in separate special gauze bags and tie the openings securely.Set the amber powder aside separately and make sure it does not come into contact with water.
② Soak in cold water:After washing all the herbs except the amber powder (including the bagged Japanese climbing fern spores and talc), place them in an earthenware or stainless-steel pot.Add enough cold water to cover the herbs by 2~3 cm, and soak for 30 minutes.
③ First decoction:Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat and decoct for 30 minutes.Strain the first decoction through a sieve and pour it into a large bowl or thermos for later use.
④ Second decoction:Add warm water to the pot, just enough to cover the herbs.Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat and decoct for 20~25 minutes.Strain the second decoction and mix it evenly with the first. The total amount of decoction is usually about 400 ml ~ 600 ml.
How to Take It and Stone-Passing Exercise
① Divide into doses: Divide the mixed decoction into 2 doses (one in the morning and one in the evening), and drink it warm 30 minutes after meals.
② How to take the amber powder: Before drinking each dose, take a small spoonful of amber powder, about 1~1.5 g, sprinkle it directly into the warm decoction, stir well, and drink it in one gulp.
③ When to take it: Clinically, it is recommended to take one dose in the afternoon (when stones are most active) or 30 minutes before exercise.
④ Drink water: After taking the decoction, be sure to drink in several portions at least 500~800 ml of warm water over the following 1~2 hours. The large amount of medicine and water is intended to form a high-pressure “reservoir” in the kidneys and ureters.
⑤ Supplemental exercise: Half an hour after drinking the water, if your physical condition permits (with no severe colicky pain or serious heart or lung disease), perform 15~20 minutes of jumping exercise (such as jumping in place with both feet, skipping rope, or going up and down stairs). Using gravity and vibration, together with the lubricating effects of winter mallow seeds and talc on the urinary tract, this is intended to help shake the stones outward.
