 Benefits and uses

Astragalus is also known as northern astragalus, bei qi, and huang qi. It is the dried root of the leguminous plants Mongolian astragalus or membranous astragalus.A perennial herb and a qi-tonifying medicinal herb.

It has a sweet taste, is slightly warm in nature, and enters the spleen and lung meridians.

According to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, astragalus helps tonify qi and raise yang, secure the exterior and stop sweating, promote urination and reduce swelling, generate fluids and nourish blood, promote circulation and relieve painful obstruction, support detoxification and discharge pus, reduce sores and promote tissue regeneration, enhance immunity, regulate metabolism, protect the cardiovascular system, and combat fatigue, as well as provide antioxidant effects.

It is mainly used for all conditions involving qi deficiency and blood depletion, including yang deficiency, fatigue, poor appetite and loose stools, sinking middle qi, chronic diarrhea and rectal prolapse, blood in the stool and uterine bleeding, exterior deficiency with spontaneous daytime sweating, edema, internal heat with thirst, blood deficiency with a sallow complexion, hemiplegia, arthralgia and numbness, abscesses that are slow to drain, chronic ulcers that are slow to heal, and lung-deficiency cough.

 

For spleen and kidney qi deficiency, fatigue, weakness, poor appetite, and loose stools, it may be used alone or together withGinsengand used synergistically.

For chronic diarrhea, rectal prolapse, visceral prolapse, and similar conditions caused by spleen deficiency with sinking middle qi, it is often used with ginseng,Cimicifuga、Bupleurumand other herbs.

For weak lung qi, weak coughing, shortness of breath, wheezing, thin clear phlegm, a low voice, and reluctance to speak, it is often combined with ginseng, purple aster,Schisandraand other herbs.
