Polygonatum is also known as qi essence, “immortal’s surplus grain,” and other names. Ancient texts state: “Polygonatum obtains the qi of the earth, receives the essence of heaven and earth, and is therefore so named.” There are many varieties of Polygonatum, but only three are included in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia: Polygonatum sibiricum (rhizomes with chicken-head-like buds), Polygonatum kingianum (large Polygonatum), and Polygonatum cyrtonema (multi-flowered Polygonatum). It is the dried rhizome of plants in the lily family, with distinctive nodular depressions. Polygonatum contains various active nutritional components, including Polygonatum polysaccharides, flavonoids, saponins, alkaloids, amino acids, and trace elements. It is an excellent herb for replenishing qi and nourishing yin.

Polygonatum is sweet and neutral in nature and replenishes qi and yin. It both nourishes yin and moistens the lungs, and supplements the kidneys and nourishes essence while also tonifying the spleen and boosting qi, making it an excellent nourishing herb. It is effective for various conditions caused by deficiency of both the lungs and kidneys or deficiency of both qi and yin. It is used for spleen and stomach qi deficiency, fatigue and weakness, stomach yin deficiency, dry mouth and poor appetite, dry cough due to lung deficiency, chronic cough with blood in the sputum, deficiency of essence and blood, soreness and weakness of the lower back and knees, premature graying of the hair, internal heat, wasting-thirst, and more.
Tips
For spleen and stomach qi deficiency, poor nourishment, fatigue, and weakness: commonly used together with Codonopsis root and Atractylodes.For yin deficiency with dry lungs, dry cough, and little phlegm: use alone or together with ginseng, fritillaria, and similar ingredients to moisten the lungs, nourish yin, transform phlegm, and relieve cough.
Soup for 2～3 servings

Chicken or black-bone chicken 16oz, lean meat 8oz, ginseng, red ginseng, or Korean ginseng 20g, Ophiopogon japonicus 30g, prepared Polygonatum, Rehmannia root, Astragalus root, pitted red dates, and goji berries 20g each; simmer with 3 bowls of boiling water at 100° for 4～5 hours.
Polygonatum, Goji Berry, and Oxtail Soup: 1 oxtail with skin (approximately 500g), 30g Polygonatum, 30g goji berries, 10g raspberry, 30g gorgon fruit, 20g longan pulp, and 3 slices of ginger. It supplements the liver and kidneys and strengthens the tendons and bones. It is used for kidney deficiency, impotence, premature ejaculation, irregular menstruation and reduced libido in women, lower back soreness, and similar conditions.
Nourishes yin, supplements kidney yang, and replenishes essence and blood
Boil 10g each of Cynomorium slices, prepared Polygonatum, and Notoginseng slices in water. When making soup, add half a chicken or 250g pork loin.
Steep or boil 5～10g each of prepared Polygonatum, Astragalus root, and goji berries in water, or add them to soup with meat.
Simmer 9g each of prepared Polygonatum and ginseng with half a chicken to make soup (use half the amount when steeping in water).
Simmer 9g each of prepared Polygonatum and dong quai with half a chicken to make soup (use half the amount when steeping in water).
