Raw Rehmannia Root and Prepared Rehmannia Root come from the same plant and have no compatibility contraindications when used together. They differ only in their processing and preparation methods. Raw Rehmannia Root primarily clears heat and cools the blood, while Prepared Rehmannia Root is better for nourishing yin and replenishing the blood. Cooking them together in soup or congee can enhance their blood-nourishing effects, while also helping clear heat, reduce internal fire, and improve sleep. Both may help support bone health, and using them together may produce better results.

1. Raw Rehmannia Root: A herb that clears heat and nourishes yin. It is bitter and cold in nature and enters the Heart, Liver, and Kidney meridians. It clears heat and cools the blood, nourishes yin and generates fluids, helps prevent miscarriage, moistens the intestines and relieves constipation, and may help regulate blood sugar. It may be used for heat entering the nutritive and blood levels, fever-induced toxic rashes, vomiting blood and nosebleeds, yin deficiency with internal heat, heat-related illness that damages yin, crimson tongue with irritability and thirst, fluid-deficiency constipation, steaming-bone fever, and internal-heat thirst.
2. After processing, Prepared Rehmannia Root changes from cold to warm in nature and from bitter to sweet in flavor. Its effects therefore shift from clearing to tonifying, with its main functions being to nourish yin and replenish the blood, benefit the essence, and fill the marrow.

The Ancient Formula for Replenishing Blood: Goddess Four-Substance Soup (Ligusticum–Angelica–Rehmannia–Peony Decoction)
Sichuan Lovage Rhizome 8g, Angelica Root 10g, Prepared Rehmannia Root and White Peony Root 12g each.
1. Add 12g of Danshen (for promoting blood circulation) for enhanced effects.
2. For excessive uterine bleeding: add 8g of madder root, plus 10g each of mugwort leaf and donkey-hide gelatin.
3. For severe menstrual cramps: add 12g of Cyperus Rhizome and 10g of Corydalis Tuber.
4. For concurrent qi deficiency: add 18g each of Codonopsis Root and Astragalus Root.
5. For blood deficiency with a cold constitution: add 5g of cinnamon bark, turmeric, or prepared ginger.
Soak the herbs in clean water for 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Place them in a clay pot with approximately 3 bowls of water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for about 30 minutes, until approximately 1 bowl of liquid remains. (Add brown sugar to taste.)
Note: People with a heat-prone constitution should replace “Prepared Rehmannia Root” with “Raw Rehmannia Root,” for example, if they experience excessive internal heat after taking it. The formulas above may be adjusted to personal taste by adding pork bones, lean meat, spare ribs, or chicken, along with an appropriate amount of water, to prepare a nourishing medicinal soup that can be used as both food and herbal therapy.
