Asarum is also known as Chinese asarum, small asarum, Shaoxin, single-leaf herb, golden basin herb, and four-tael hemp. It is the dried root and rhizome of the perennial herbaceous plants Northern asarum, Seoul asarum, or Chinese asarum in the Aristolochiaceae family (6–8 years old), and is a medicinal herb that releases the exterior and dispels wind-cold.
Pungent and warm in nature. Enters the Heart, Lung, and Kidney meridians.
Asarum releases the exterior and dispels cold, with strong effects in dispelling wind and relieving pain. It also opens the orifices, warms the Lungs, and transforms retained fluids.It is an excellent remedy for various types of pain caused by wind-cold and wind-dampness, as well as sinusitis, nasal congestion, and headaches. It can also warm and disperse Lung cold and transform phlegm and retained fluids, making it an essential herb for treating retained cold fluids in the Lungs. It is especially suitable for Shaoyin headaches, sinusitis, headaches, toothaches, and similar conditions.
It is commonly used for antipyretic, sedative, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory purposes. Indications include wind-cold common cold, headaches, toothaches, nasal congestion and runny nose, allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, cough and wheezing due to retained fluids, and all types of wind-dampness painful obstruction.
The Shennong Bencao Jing states: “Treats cough and retching, headaches with throbbing in the brain, contractures of all the joints, wind-dampness painful obstruction, and dead flesh. Improves the eyes and benefits the nine orifices.”
Tips
[Jiuwei Qianghuo Decoction] comes from the Yuan dynasty medical classic What Is Difficult to Know About This Matter, and is one of the most representative classical formulas among traditional Chinese medicine exterior-releasing formulas. It has long been regarded as a benchmark formula for “releasing the exterior and warming the interior, dispersing wind-cold externally, and clearing interior heat internally.” It primarily treats patterns involving external invasion by wind-cold-dampness with internal accumulation of heat: aversion to cold and fever, absence of sweating, headache and stiff neck, soreness and pain in the limbs, bitter taste with slight thirst, a white or slightly yellow tongue coating, and a floating pulse.
Formula: Qianghuo, Fangfeng, and Cangzhu, 9 grams each; Xixin, 3 grams; Chuanxiong, Baizhi, Dihuang, Huangqin, and Gancao, 6 grams each. In modern clinical practice, it is often prepared with fresh ginger or dried ginger, 3 slices, simmered together.
- Soaking: Place the cleaned herbs in a clay pot and add cold water until it is 2–3 cm above the herbs. Soak for 30 minutes.
- Decoction: Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to low heat and simmer for 15–20 minutes. Do not simmer it for a long time like a nourishing tonic.
- Strain and collect the liquid: Pour out the decoction. It can usually be decocted a second time (for the second decoction, add just enough water to cover the dregs, then simmer over low heat for 15 minutes after the water boils). Combine the two decoctions, yielding approximately 300–400 milliliters, and divide into two doses to take 30 minutes after meals. “Take hot or warm.” (It is recommended to go to bed and cover yourself with a blanket to induce sweating.)
*Important: Do not simmer for a long time. The formula contains many aromatic herbs that release the exterior and dispel wind. If simmered for too long, their medicinal effects will evaporate with the steam, greatly reducing their ability to induce sweating and relieve pain.
