Chinese chive bulb is also known as Chinese chive root and Chinese chive head. It is the dried bulb of Allium macrostemon or garlic chives, plants in the lily family, and is used in traditional Chinese medicine to regulate qi.
It has a pungent and bitter taste, is warm in nature, and enters the Heart, Lung, Stomach, and Large Intestine meridians.
It is traditionally used to unblock yang, disperse clumps, promote qi circulation, relieve stagnation, ease asthma, provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, inhibit thrombosis, and regulate blood lipids. It is primarily used for chest impediment and heart pain, fullness and distending pain in the epigastrium and abdomen, and tenesmus following diarrhea or dysentery. It may also be used for indigestion, cough with abundant phlegm, and related conditions.

Modern clinical reference dosages:
1. Trichosanthes Fruit, Chinese Chive Bulb, and Baijiu Decoction:For milder heart conditions, primarily treating chest impediment with chest and back pain, shortness of breath, and labored breathing. It focuses on unblocking yang, dispersing clumps, promoting qi circulation, and transforming phlegm; the patient can still lie flat.
Whole trichosanthes fruit30g, cut into small pieces, Chinese chive bulb15g; add600 milliliters of water and 150 milliliters of huangjiu, and simmeruntil approximately 400 milliliters remain;divide into 2 doses and drink warm.
2. Trichosanthes Fruit, Chinese Chive Bulb, and Pinellia Decoction: fortypical symptoms such as heart pain radiating through to the back (pain radiating from the heart to the back), inability to lie flat(pain so severe that lying down is impossible), and concurrent phlegm-fluid affecting the Stomach and rebellious Stomach qi,with emphasis on directing rebellious qi downward and transforming phlegm-fluid.. This formula adds Pinellia to the foundation of the Trichosanthes Fruit, Chinese Chive Bulb, and Baijiu Decoction, enhancing its ability to purge phlegm and disperse clumps, making it suitable for heart discomfort caused by exuberant phlegm turbidity.
Whole trichosanthes fruit 30g, cut into small pieces, Chinese chive bulb 15g, ginger-processed or prepared Pinellia 15g; add 100 milliliters of huangjiu and 700 milliliters of water, and simmer until half the volume remains. Divide into three warm doses taken in the morning, midday, and evening.
Adjustments: For pronounced cold, add cinnamon twig and fresh ginger; for marked blood stasis, add notoginseng and safflower; for qi deficiency, add codonopsis root and astragalus root.
3. Immature Bitter Orange, Chinese Chive Bulb, and Cinnamon Twig Decoction:a formula for severe chest impediment characterized by “phlegm and qi obstruction and disordered qi movement.” Because it includes immature bitter orange and magnolia bark, it has a stronger effect than the first two formulas in breaking up stagnant qi, relieving focal distention, directing qi downward, and unblocking yang.
Immature bitter orange 12g, magnolia bark 12g, Chinese chive bulb 24g, cinnamon twig 6g, whole trichosanthes fruit 30g, cut into small pieces.
Boil first: Place the immature bitter orange and magnolia bark in a pot, add 800 milliliters of water, bring to a boil over high heat, then simmer for approximately 20 minutes.
Add later: Add the Chinese chive bulb, cinnamon twig, and trichosanthes fruit to the pot and simmer together for approximately 10 minutes.
Administration: Strain approximately 450 milliliters of the decoction and divide into three warm doses taken in the morning, midday, and evening.
Contraindications for all three formulas: People with yin deficiency and excessive internal heat or bleeding disorders; those with yin deficiency with internal heat, characterized by a red tongue with little or no coating, dry mouth and throat, heat in the palms, soles, and chest, night sweats, hot flashes, and related symptoms; or patients with bleeding disorders, such as a tendency to vomit blood, cough up blood, or experience cerebral hemorrhage.
