Benefits and uses
Angelica dahurica is also known asXuezhi and Fangxiang. It is the dried root of the Apiaceae plant Angelica dahurica.It is a commonly used herb for releasing exterior cold and promoting blood circulation, as well as a frequently used aromatic spice.
It is pungent and warm in nature and flavor, and is associated with the stomach, large intestine, and lung meridians.
Ithelps release the exterior and dispel cold, promote blood circulation and relieve pain, clear nasal congestion, dry dampness and stop abnormal vaginal discharge, reduce swelling and expel pus, dispel wind and relieve itching, and brighten the skin and reduce dark spots. It may be beneficial for wind-cold and wind-heat colds, headaches and toothaches, rheumatic pain, sinus disorders, abnormal vaginal discharge, and sores, carbuncles, and abscesses. It may also be used for gynecological conditions and has notable applications in fighting inflammation and bacteria and lowering blood pressure.
The Compendium of Materia Medica records: “Angelica dahurica is white in color and pungent in flavor, traveling through the Hand Yangming meridian; its nature is warm and its qi is rich, traveling through the Foot Yangming meridian; its fragrance rises upward and enters the Hand Taiyin Lung meridian. Conditions of the head, eyes, eyebrows, and teeth involve wind-heat in these three meridians; conditions such as chronic discharge, abnormal vaginal discharge, and carbuncles involve damp-heat in these three meridians. For wind-heat, pungency disperses it; for damp-heat, warmth eliminates it. It is the principal herb of the Yangming meridian and can therefore also treat blood disorders and pregnancy-related conditions, while expelling pus, promoting tissue regeneration, and relieving pain. It treats sinus disorders, toothache, bleeding during urination, pain in the brow ridge, constipation caused by wind in the large intestine, dizziness caused by blood deficiency in women, vomiting and food regurgitation; it counteracts arsenic poisoning and snakebite and treats nosebleeds and wounds caused by knives, arrows, and metal.”
Tips
Crucian carp or other soup (for relieving head-wind)
15g sliced Sichuan lovage root, 15g sliced Angelica dahurica, 10g sliced Gastrodia elata, 1 white crucian carp (approximately 250g), sliced ginger, scallion sections, cooking wine, pepper, and other ingredients as needed.
Clean and prepare all the ingredients. First, heat oil in a wok and pan-fry the crucian carp until golden brown on both sides. Wash the wok again, then add all the ingredients and approximately 1000ml of water. Bring to a boil over high heat, reduce to low heat, simmer for about 30 minutes, and season.
The Nine-Ingredient Qianghuo Decoction comes from the Yuan-dynasty text What the Body Cannot Know, and is one of the most representative classic formulas for releasing the exterior in traditional Chinese medicine. It is known as a benchmark formula for “releasing the exterior and warming the interior, dispelling wind-cold externally, and clearing interior heat internally.” It is primarily used for exterior wind-cold-dampness with underlying interior heat: aversion to cold and fever, absence of sweating, headache and stiff neck, aching and painful limbs, bitter taste and slight thirst, a white or slightly yellow tongue coating, and a floating pulse.
Formula: 9g each of Qianghuo, Saposhnikovia root, and Atractylodes; 3g Asarum; 6g each of Sichuan lovage root, Angelica dahurica, Rehmannia root, Scutellaria root, and licorice. In modern clinical practice, it is often prepared with fresh or dried ginger, 3 slices, simmered together.
- Soaking: Place the cleaned herbs in an earthenware pot and add cold water until it is 2–3 centimeters above the herbs. Soak for 30 minutes.
- Decoction: Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to low heat and simmer for 15–20 minutes. Do not simmer it for a long time like a nourishing tonic.
- Strain and collect the liquid: Pour out the herbal liquid. Usually, the herbs can be decocted a second time (for the second decoction, add just enough water to cover the residue and simmer over low heat for 15 minutes after the water boils). Combine the two decoctions, collecting approximately 300–400 milliliters, and take warm in two doses, 30 minutes after meals.
*Important: Do not simmer for a long time. The formula contains many aromatic herbs that release the exterior and dispel wind. If simmered for too long, their effects may evaporate with the steam, substantially reducing their ability to induce sweating and relieve pain.
