Peony root is divided into two different traditional Chinese medicinal materials: “White Peony Root” and “Red Peony Root” (wild Red Peony Root is also called Jing Red Peony Root).Ancient texts state: “There is only one kind of peony root, the dried root of a plant in the buttercup family, and no clear distinction was made between White Peony Root and Red Peony Root.” Later generations also inaccurately classified peony roots with red flowers as Red Peony Root and those with white flowers as White Peony Root. In fact, regardless of the color of their flowers, both are the roots of plants in the buttercup family. However, because modern processing methods and origins differ, their names, properties, meridian affiliations, and therapeutic applications as recorded in the Chinese pharmacopeia also differ.
Wild Red Peony RootThe outer skin is rough and brownish, and may be loose and easy to peel off. The cut surface has distinct radial patterns (chrysanthemum-heart pattern),and the texture is brittle and hard. It is made by digging up, washing, directly slicing, and drying the root,and is used to clear heat and regulate the blood.
Red Peony Root is bitter and can drain and disperse; its slight coolness clears heat, and it enters the Liver meridian. It clears Liver fire and cools the blood while also promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis. It combines the actions of cooling blood heat, clearing Liver fire, and dispersing stagnant blood. It may be considered for blood heat, blood stasis, or Liver fire, whether occurring alone or together, and is particularly suitable for pain involving blood heat with stasis, blood stasis with heat, or Liver fire combined with stasis.

Tips
1. For excessive vaginal discharge, dysmenorrhea, abdominal pain, and irregular menstruation: 5g Red Peony Root, 3g Cyperus Rhizome, and 3g flower tea. Infuse with 250mL boiling water and drink, continuing to re-infuse until the flavor becomes weak.
2. To help eliminate facial acne: 20g Red Peony Root, 50g mung beans, 40g Poria, 15g Chinese violet, and 150g lean pork or pork ribs. Wash all ingredients, place them in a clay pot, add an appropriate amount of water, bring to a boil over high heat, then simmer for 2 hours and season to taste.
3. To cool the blood, remove stasis, reduce swelling, and relieve pain: 10g Red Peony Root, 10 red dates, and 5g black tea. Add an appropriate amount of water to the Red Peony Root and bring to a boil. Add the red dates and continue boiling for 10 minutes, then add the black tea.
4. For frequent bloody diarrhea with unbearable abdominal pain: 15g each of Red Peony Root, Sanguisorba Root, and Phellodendron Bark. Decoction in water and take orally.
