Drynaria rhizome is also known as hairy ginger, monkey ginger, stone hairy ginger, Shen ginger, and crossing-the-mountain dragon, among other names.It is the dried rhizome of Drynaria fortunei, a plant in the Polypodiaceae family, which commonly grows attached to rocks, walls, or tree trunks. After harvesting, the soil and sand are removed and it is sun-dried, then the “hairs” are singed off. It is an important herb used to tonify the kidneys and strengthen the bones, as well as for injuries from falls and blows. It is commonly used to prepare infused water, decoctions, or medicinal liquor.
Authentic product: Whole Drynaria rhizomes are generally flat and strip-shaped, often curved, with a surface ranging from brown to dark brown and covered in hairs. They are light and break easily, with a reddish-brown fracture surface. Another particularly distinctive feature is that they have two types of characteristics: “leaf-bearing petiole base scars” and “non-leaf-bearing petiole base scars.”

Tips
To tonify the kidneys and strengthen the bones: commonly combined with epimedium, desertliving cistanche, and Morinda root.
For osteoporosis, commonly combined with eucommia bark, dipsacus root, and Chinese achyranthes root.
For fracture recovery: commonly combined with eucommia bark and parasitic loranthus stem.
For rheumatic arthritis: commonly combined with parasitic loranthus stem, pubescent angelica root, and notopterygium root.
To nourish the Liver and Kidneys: commonly combined with goji berries and prepared rehmannia root.

Drynaria rhizome 30 g (tonifies the kidneys and strengthens the bones; reconnects torn tendons and sets fractured bones)
Calcined pyrite 10 g (disperses blood stasis, reduces swelling, and helps set fractures and relieve pain); raw material must not be used. It is essential to use calcined pyrite;
Myrrh 10 g (promotes blood circulation and relieves pain, reduces swelling, and promotes tissue regeneration); preferably use toasted myrrh
Dong quai root 15 g and safflower 10 g (promote blood circulation, dispel blood stasis, improve circulation through the channels, and reduce swelling)
- Powder mixed with liquid: Grind or crush all the ingredients above into a powder. Take 3 g each time, twice daily. Take with warm rice wine or warm water. Rice wine can serve as a “medicinal guide” and enhance the blood-circulating and channel-unblocking effects.
- Decoction: Calcined pyrite add approximately 600 mLof cool water, bring to a boil, then simmer the first ingredient for 30 minutes. Add approximately 600 mL of warm water, then add Drynaria rhizome, dong quai root, and safflower, and decoct for approximately 45 minutes. (Add the myrrh during the last 5 minutes before removing the decoction from the heat.) Turn off the heat and strain out approximately 300–400 mL of liquid. Divide into 2 doses and take warm 30 minutes after lunch and dinner.
