Polyporus sanghuang is also known as Tibetan sanghuang, rock sanghuang, rock polypore, and mixed-tree sanghuang. Sanghuang was called sang er in ancient times. It is the fruiting body of the perennial fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium in the family Polyporaceae that grows parasitically on trees. Mixed-tree sanghuang is generally much more affordable than mulberry-tree sanghuang, although its medicinal effects are relatively weaker. It is commonly boiled in water, infused in alcohol, or used in soups.
It has a sweet taste and a cold nature, and is associated with the liver and kidney meridians.
It is believed to clear heat and detoxify, promote blood circulation and remove blood stasis, stop bleeding, resolve retained fluids, relieve diarrhea, benefit the five viscera, enhance immunity,fight tumors,act as an antioxidant, and slow aging. It may be used for hepatitis, nodules, cysts, tumors, uterine bleeding, urinary bleeding, abnormal vaginal discharge, amenorrhea with blood stasis, postpartum blood stasis, and other conditions.
The Shennong Bencao Jing records: “Sang er, the black kind. It belongs to the Superior Class; it is slightly cold in nature and non-toxic. Long-term use lightens the body, prevents aging, and prolongs life. It primarily treats excessive red or white vaginal discharge in women, blood disorders, abdominal masses and accumulations, and vaginal pain. It addresses yin–yang, cold–heat, and infertility.”
Tips
It is recommended to wash, sun-dry, and cut into pieces for later use (it may be used whole when making soup).
To boil in water: Use 5–10g of sanghuang with approximately 500 ml of water. Bring to a boil, then simmer over low heat for about 20–30 minutes.
Note: It may be used alone or boiled with other ingredients, such as red dates, goji berries, or sliced reishi.
For slow-cooked or boiled soup:
Nourishing yin and replenishing blood: 1 chicken or black-boned chicken (approximately 24oz), 8oz lean meat or pork ribs, 30g sanghuang, 20g notoginseng, 10g each of dendrobium and ophiopogon, half a dried tangerine peel, sliced red dates, sliced ginger, and an appropriate amount of water.
Replenishing qi and nourishing blood: 1 chicken or black-boned chicken (approximately 24oz), 8oz lean meat or pork ribs,20g each of sanghuang and astragalus, 10g ginseng,angelica and sliced red dates,10g goji berries, sliced ginger, and an appropriate amount of water.
Replenishing qi, calming the mind, strengthening the spleen, and drying dampness: 24oz pork bones or pork ribs, 20g each of sanghuang and astragalus, 30g atractylodes, 15g reishi, 100g poria with hostwood, half a dried tangerine peel, sliced ginger, and an appropriate amount of water.
