When cooked, they are neutral in nature, sweet and bland, promote urination, and also nourish the body. They strengthen the spleen, drain dampness, and stop diarrhea, making them suitable for spleen deficiency with abundant dampness but no heat or only mild heat. Raw coix seeds are used to drain dampness, relieve painful obstruction, clear heat, and expel pus; cooked coix seeds are used to strengthen the spleen and stop diarrhea.
The Compendium of Materia Medica records that coix seeds are a Yangming medicinal herb that can strengthen the spleen and benefit the stomach. When deficient, replenish the mother organ; therefore, they are used for lung abscesses and lung atrophy. For diseases of the tendons and bones, treating the Yangming meridian is fundamental; therefore, they are used for muscle contractures, tendon spasms, and wind-dampness arthralgia. Earth overcomes water and eliminates dampness; therefore, they are used for diarrhea, dysentery, and edema.
