Notoginseng is also known as tianqi, shanqi, “gold that cannot be exchanged,” and blood ginseng. It is a perennial herb in the ginseng genus of the Araliaceae family. It is generally harvested after three to seven years. Each plant has three leafstalks, and each leafstalk bears seven leaflets, hence the name “notoginseng.”
The Compendium of Materia Medica records: Ginseng is the foremost herb for replenishing qi, while notoginseng is the foremost herb for replenishing blood. Their flavors and effects are similar; therefore, notoginseng is also called “ginseng notoginseng” and is considered the most precious of Chinese medicinal herbs.
