Zhejiang fritillaria bulb, also known as Zhejiang fritillaria, is the dried bulb of a perennial herb in the Fritillaria genus of the lily family. It is one of the renowned geo-authentic medicinal herbs known as the “Eight Zhejiang Medicines,” and the Chinese Pharmacopoeia classifies it under herbs that transform phlegm, stop coughing, and relieve wheezing, specifically as a “heat-clearing, phlegm-transforming” herb.
It has a bitter taste and a cold nature, and is associated with the Lung and Heart meridians. It is known as “a superior herb for treating phlegm and an essential medicine for resolving abscesses.”

3. Oyster shell (salty substances soften hardness and clear heat): Also a deputy herb, it is responsible for softening lumps.
Because making the pills is complicated and they take longer to show effects, modern practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine use a decoction instead:
Main formula: 15–30g scrophularia root, 15–30g oyster shell (decoct first), and 10–15g Zhejiang fritillaria bulb.
1. Soak: After washing the scrophularia root and Zhejiang fritillaria bulb, soak them in a bowl of cold water for 30 minutes, until covered. When placing them in the pot, pour in the soaking water as well.
2. Pre-decoct the oyster shell: Place the raw oyster shell in a clay pot or stainless-steel pot, add approximately 500 mL of cold water, bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat and continue simmering for approximately 30 minutes.
3. Combine and decoct: Add the soaked scrophularia root and Zhejiang fritillaria bulb, together with the soaking water, to the pot. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat and decoct for approximately 30 minutes before turning off the heat. While hot, strain the decoction through cheesecloth, yielding approximately 300–400 mL.
4. Administration: Take in 2 divided doses daily, once 30 minutes after lunch and once 30 minutes after dinner.
