Note: Sichuan lovage rhizome contains natural volatile oils, alkaloids, and other compounds. Main differences between raw and processed Sichuan lovage rhizome

Tips
Chuanxiong Tea-Seasoning Powder: From the classic formula in the Song Dynasty text Taiping Huimin Hejiju Fang, it is effective for headaches caused by externally contracted wind. It dispels wind and cold, opens the orifices, and relieves pain. It is commonly used for headaches accompanied by aversion to cold, fever, nasal congestion, and other symptoms.
Original formula: Sichuan lovage rhizome, Schizonepeta (stems removed), 12 grams each; dahurian angelica root, notopterygium root, honey-fried licorice root, 6 grams each; asarum, 3 grams; saposhnikovia root, 4.5 grams; peppermint, 24 grams, ground into a fine powder. Take 6 grams each time with plain tea after meals. Today, it has been modified into a decoction.
People with yin deficiency and blood dryness, and those with high blood pressure, should use with caution.
Crucian carp or other fish soup (for relieving head wind): 15g Sichuan lovage slices, 15g dahurian angelica slices, 10g gastrodia slices, 1 white crucian carp (about 8oz), ginger slices, scallion sections, cooking wine, pepper, and other ingredients as desired.
Clean and prepare all ingredients. First, heat oil in a wok and fry the fish until golden brown on both sides. Wash the wok again, then add all ingredients and about 1000ml water. Bring to a boil over high heat, reduce to low heat, simmer for about 30 minutes, and season to taste.
Wind-Dispelling and Dampness-Removing Soup (for stroke-related paralysis, rheumatic bone pain, and more)
Saposhnikovia root 2.5 grams, pubescent angelica root 3 grams, licorice root 1.5 grams, angelica root 3 grams, dried sand ginger 3 grams, Sichuan lovage rhizome 2.5 grams, tangerine red 3 grams, red peony root 3 grams, pinellia prepared with ginger 3 grams, atractylodes rhizome and white atractylodes 3 grams each, poria 3 grams, lindera root 3 grams, immature bitter orange 3 grams, platycodon root 2.5 grams, coptis 3 grams, scutellaria 3 grams, dahurian angelica root 2.7 grams. Add 500 milliliters of water and decoct until 300 milliliters remain. Take on an empty stomach.
The Classic Blood-Enriching Formula: Goddess Four Substances Soup (Sichuan Lovage, Angelica, Rehmannia, and Peony)
Sichuan lovage rhizome 8g, angelica root 10g, prepared rehmannia root and white peony root 12g each.
1. Add 12g red salvia root for improved blood circulation.
2. For uterine bleeding: add 8 grams madder root, and 10 grams each of Artemisiae Argyi and donkey-hide gelatin.
3. For severe menstrual pain: add 12 grams cyperus rhizome and 10 grams corydalis rhizome.
4. For concurrent qi deficiency: add 18 grams codonopsis root and 18 grams astragalus root.
5. For blood deficiency with cold constitution: add cinnamon bark, turmeric, or 5 grams dried ginger.
After washing the herbs, soak them in water for 30 minutes. Place them in a clay pot with about 3 bowls of water, bring to a boil, then simmer over low heat for about 30 minutes until 1 bowl remains. (Add brown sugar to taste.)
Note: For people with a yang constitution, replace “prepared rehmannia root” with “raw rehmannia root,” such as when taking the formula causes excessive internal heat. The formulas above may be prepared according to personal taste with pork bones, lean meat, spare ribs, chicken, and an appropriate amount of water as a nourishing medicinal food soup.
