Unprocessed Aconite Root is also known as Aconite Root or Mud Aconite Root. It is a processed “daughter root” of Aconitum carmichaelii, a plant in the buttercup family. After undergoing different processing methods, it is also called “Processed Aconite Root,” “Yellow Aconite Root,” or “Black Shun Slices.” There is also a salt-processed variety. Processed Aconite Root has dark brown-black skin, a dark yellow cut surface, an oily and glossy appearance, a translucent quality, and a horn-like fracture. It has a slight odor and a bland taste. It is a warming interior herb, also known as a cold-dispelling herb, and is commonly used to prepare decoctions, infuse liquor, or add to soups and porridge.
Nature and flavor: pungent, sweet, and extremely hot; toxic. Enters the Heart, Kidney, and Spleen meridians.
Aconite Root has an extremely strong medicinal effect, but the unprocessed form is toxic and must be processed before use. It is used to restore devastated yang and rescue collapse, tonify fire and assist yang, dispel cold and relieve pain, strengthen the sinews and bones, and strengthen yin.
It is primarily used for devastated-yang patterns (such as cold limbs, a faint and barely perceptible pulse, and heart failure), Heart and Kidney yang deficiency, impotence and uterine cold, dysentery with red and white stools, cold-damp painful obstruction, wind-cold affecting the lower back and spine, yin-cold edema, cold pain in the epigastrium and abdomen, stomach-cold pain, and deficiency-cold diarrhea and vomiting. It may also be used to strengthen the bones, treat infertility due to uterine cold, relieve muscle spasms associated with cholera, and inhibit tumors.
Tips
Sini Decoction: It is the classic formula most commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine, both historically and today, to restore devastated yang and rescue collapse. It comes from Zhang Zhongjing’s Treatise on Cold Damage from the Eastern Han dynasty and consists ofone Aconite Root, 1.5 liang of Dried Ginger, and 2 liang of Honey-Fried Licorice Root. It is primarily used to restore devastated yang and rescue collapse, and warm the middle and dispel cold. It is suitable for cold limbs, aversion to cold with curled-up posture, abdominal pain and diarrhea, a faint and barely perceptible pulse, and impending yang collapse, among other conditions.
In clinical practice, traditional Chinese medicine practitioners generally adjust the formula according to the specific circumstances.
For example ①: Processed Aconite Root 12g. Add approximately 900 milliliters of water and pre-decoct for about 30～60 minutes to reduce toxicity. Then add 6g of sliced Dried Ginger and 9g of Honey-Fried Licorice Root, decoct for another 30 minutes, and obtain approximately 300 milliliters of liquid. Take 1 dose daily, divided into 2 portions, warm, after meals.
② Processed Aconite Root approximately 15～20g. Add approximately 600 milliliters of water and pre-decoct for about 30～60 minutes to reduce toxicity. Then add approximately 4.5g of sliced Dried Ginger and approximately 6g of Honey-Fried Licorice Root, decoct for another 30 minutes, and obtain approximately 200 milliliters of liquid. Take 1 dose daily, divided into 2 portions, warm, after meals.
Note: Later generations have long debated the ancient systems of weights and measures. Based on archaeological evidence, one liang during the Eastern Han dynasty was approximately 15.6 grams in modern units.
