Turtle shell, also known as guiban, is made from the carapace or plastron of the Chinese three-striped box turtle and is a yin-nourishing herb.
Turtle shell has a salty and sweet flavor, is slightly cold in nature, and enters the Liver, Kidney, and Heart meridians. After roasting, its nature changes from “cold” to “warm.” In traditional Chinese medicine, animal shells are generally roasted before being used medicinally. Roasting enhances their medicinal potency and makes their active components easier to release (raw turtle shell is very hard, while roasted turtle shell becomes brittle).
It nourishes yin and subdues yang, benefits the kidneys and strengthens the bones, nourishes the blood and tonifies the heart, cools the blood and stops bleeding, stabilizes menstruation and stops excessive uterine bleeding, softens hardness and disperses masses, and supports immune function. It may be used for yin-deficiency fever and night sweats caused by hyperactive yang, dizziness and blurred vision.
